C? The death of Senator Kate* Kefauver in Washington removes from the Senate scene one of the great individualists of the upper legis lative body but does not alter the present Senate outlook. Kefauver was, in his years, not too popular among his fel low Senators, but at his death they paid him tribute. He was a political maverick; he wouldn't play the party machine way be cause he eouldnt gain the back ing of the party machine. Thus, he irked party men, as he went to the people with his campaign in 1MB and IBM. He had become famous as a Senate investigator of crime, and what ever his detractors say of him, It is a fact that his investiga tions resulted in the imprison ment of top New York and Chi' cago criminals. The people liked him, in spite of the party bosses' dislike, and it was a big and bitter blow to Kefauver when party bosaes passed him over in 1932 and selected John Sparkman of Ala bama to run as the Vice Presi dential nominee of the Demo cratic Party. Kefauver was more popular than Sparkman. But in IBM Kefauver got his chance, when he nosed out Senator John Kennedy for the second spot on his party's ticket, after again losing his bid for the top nomination. To the end of his Senate career he was in dependent. His last accomplish ment in the Senate was having his drug control bill passed ? which might never have been accepted except for the publicity and scare caused by deformed babies. Kefauver had been pushing * for such a bill long before the deformed babies sensation and had been seeking lower prices for drugs and medicines, too, which he thought was possible and justified. The opinion in the Senate now seems to be that the test-ban treaty with Russia will be ap proved by an overwhelming vote. The best guess is that the treaty will get at least 89 votes and maybe a few more. FLYING STONE KILLS LAD Hillsdale, N. J. ?
