Diverted Acreage May
Now Be Used To Graze

duction of crops under the 1963
Feed Grain and Wheat Stabili
zation Programs will be permit
ted, according to Vaughn Tug
man, chairman of the Watauga
Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation County Commit
tee.
He stated that the date for
which grazing had been per
mitted was originally Novem

leviate, to some extent, the
shortage of forage in areas con
taining spotty drought condi
tions, the date has been moved
forward to October 1.
Since many farmers normally
salvage dropped ears of corn
and other crop residue by turn
ing livestock on the harvested
cropland in the fall, the permis
sion to graze will permit farm
ers to continue this normal prac
tice without being put to un
reasonable work, time and ex
pense for fencing off diverted
acreage.
In making this announcement,
Mr. Tugman points out that in
most cases, ACP assistance
would be available for those de
siriqg to put a winter cover
ctplL oqt the diverted acreage.

James Rayfield
Rites Held Here
James Luther Rayfield, age
47, of Fairfield, Calif., died
Sept. 21 after suffering a heart
attack. He was a graduate of
Appalachian High School and
was in the first group of draft
ees from this county in 1041.
He was married to the former
Takako Okuda of Japan and
had been retired from the (J.
S. Air Force for about a year.
Funeral services were con
ducted Sept. 26, at 2 p. m. at
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Horn*
by Rev. Arlie Moretz and Rev.
J. K. Parker Jr. Burial was in
the Mount Lawn Memorial
Gardens.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Takako Rayfield of Fairfield,
Calif.; his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. George Rayfield of Rt. 2,
Boone; five brothers, Don Ray
field of Boone, Albert Rayfield,
Johnny Rayfield of Rt. 2,

Air Force Band To Present
Concerts At Appalachian
The internationally acclaimed
United States Air Force Band will
play both matinee and evening
concerts at Appalachian State
Teachers College on October 11.
They will be presented on the
Artists and Lecture Series and
will appear in concert at the
Health and Physical Education
Building Auditorium, according to
announcement by Rogers White
ner, ASTC faculty member end
chairman of public concerts.
Under the direction of Colonel
George S. Howard, one of the na
tion's moot distinguished con
ductors, the band will play a
limited number of personal ap
pearances on their 1963 fall con
cert tour.
Colonel Howard is well known
in this country through personal
contact from the many tours that
the band has made. He also en
joys an enviable reputation
around the world, as he has per
sonally conducted the United
States Air Force Band in most of
the capitals.
No band, or group of musicians,
from any walk of life, has made
such an impression on the peo
ples of the world as your own
mistily talented United States
Air Force Band, supplemented
by the fine voices of the Singing
Sergeants.
During the fall of 1962 the band
made a personal appearance tour
through the states of Montana,
Wyoming, North Dakota, South
Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri,
Michigan and Nebraska.
This year's tour, as are all
national tours of the band. Will
be entirely self-supporting.
Featuring many internationally
famous soloists, the band also
features their universally famous
choral group ? the Singing Ser
geants. They will be directed by
Captain Robert L. Landers,
organizer of the group, and
offker-m-charge of the 1963 fall
tour movement.

1963-64 of the outdoor drama,
Horn in the West, has been
