Spot each year, and all ask the
tame question: "Why did they
put the windows in the corn
ers?"
They refer to the unusual,
eyecatching, attractive and
beautiful Middle Fork Baptist
Church on U. S. Highway 321
betwettl Boon t and Blowing
Rock.
The church Is a tourist attrac
tion within itself, causing many
a car to turn around and pass
again to give its passengers a
second look at the neat brick
building that sit* In majestic
beauty cloae beside the busy
highway.
Residents for miles around
refer to the church as a fa
miliar landmark. Regional meet
ings to be held there are some
times announced simply as
scheduled for "the church with
the corner windows."
Nobody seems to know ex
actly why the church has Its
windows in the corners. All
agree, however, that they make
the building attractive and def
initely distinctive.
The Rev. Larry Penley of
Boone, known throughout North
Carolina as a Baptist pastor and
author, says an old timer told
him the corner window idea has
its origin in the German notion
of the Middle Ages that the
Devil lurked in corners and
dark places. Hence some of the
early European cathedrals had
corner windows. These served
the double purpose of letting in

ley's observation is not to be
taken lightly, for he is cur
rently completing a thesis for
his master's degree at Appalach
ian State Teachers College. His
thesis is A History of the Three
Forks Baptist Association, a
work that the churches there
may very well see fit to publish
in book form. The busy histor
ian and scholar also works in
the school's news bureau and is
pastor of Heat Camp Church
near Boone.
Mr. Penley uncovers no evi
dence of superstition at the
time Middle Fork Church was
organited in 1908. Nobody in
the congregation seems to have
voiced a fear that the devil
might lurk in a corner. But
some of them had heard their

Kiddle Fork is not the only
tourist attraction in the scenic
valley where it nestles. Less
than a half mile away Is the
widely acclaimed Tweetsie Rail
road which attracts people of
all ages for a ride behind the
steam locomotive and a boost
to the top of the mountain in
the chair lift
Railroads and tourists are for
gotten on Sunday mornings,
however, by the faithful among
the 177 members of Middle Fork
Church as they gather to hear
their pastor, the Rev. Harold
Hayes.
The devil finds no corners in
which to lurk. Rut he some
times hammers at the consci
ence of a passing tourist who
knows he ought to be in the
house of worship on Sunday
morning.
