Apps Blank Eagles In Homecoming Tilt The Appalachian Mountain eers celebrated Homecoming laat Saturday afternoon by de featieg the Eagles of Carson Newman College 24-0 before approximately 3,000 students and old grada. Appalachian held a 7-0 lead throughout moat of the game but exploded for IT points midway the last quarter to turn a close defensive battle into a rout. Appalachian reached paydirt midway the second quarter when fullback Larry Lawing ran over tackle for five yards and a score, climaxing a 49 yard drive. The Mountaineers had previously driven over for a touchdown on a drive, only to lose the ball and the score when Jimmy Hayes fumbled in the end zone. Saunders added the extra point with ? kick. Early in the third quarter ehd Joe Hightower added in surance to the Mountaineer cause when he booted a tt-ysrd field goal for a 10-0 lead. The score was set up when the Mountaineers drove from their own 10 to the Eagle 11 but were held for downs. Five minutes and one threat later the Apps hit pay dirt again when linebacker Greg Van Orden intercepted a Car son-Newman pass on the Esgle 20 and ran it over for a touch down. Saunders added the point (or 17-0. The play by Van Orden was his third such scor ing piny in the last two games and was aet up when the Eagles had taken ownership of the ball after an Appalachian threat had died on the Eagle 12. On the ensuing kickoff Car son-Newman was held for downs and forced to punt from their own 33. Safety Larry Har bin took the punt and returned it 20 yards to the Eagle 33. One play later Harbin took a hand off on a triple reverse and passed downfield to Hlghtower who was all alone on the Eagle goal. The play carried 27 yards and was the first completion for Harbin, who plays offensive end. Saunders added his third kick of the day for the final 24-0 victory. Caraon - Newman threatened only once, driving to the Ap palachian 16 near the end of the third quarter. The Moun taineer defense rose to tha oc casion and the Eagles were held on downs. Top offensive performers for the Mountaineers were backs La wing and Hayes and Larry Harbin. Defensive standouts were tackles Larry Crutchfield and Larry Hand and guards Van Orden and Richard Tiekie.
