Devils Down Demons, 18-7, In Western A A Semi-Finals By BONNIE HUNT The Appalachian High School Blue Devils downed Granite Fails, 18-7, last Friday night in Western Regional AA semi-fin als. i - '?? The game was played on Granite Falls' home field and it was the Blue Demons' first Iocs of the year after ten consecu tive victories. The win was the Blue Devils' fifth in a row and their ninth against one loss for the season. Appalachian received the opening kickoff but yvas unahle to myve the ball againat the Gnanlte Falls defense. The Dev ils were forced to punt and Granite Fall* took over on its own S7-yard line. Oil their third play from scrimmage, tailback Robert Herman swept around hi* left end. He was hit and knocked off balance twice in bis own backfield by Appala chian players,' but he maintain^ ed his balance and raced 80 yards down the sideline for the . touchdown. A placement for the extra point was good and the fchie Demons held a T-fl lead. The Apps still could ant mount up any offensive power and had to call upon the de fense to keep Granite in check. The Devils' defense kept the Blue Demons bottled up after the long touchdown and waited patiently for the Appalachian offense to get into^hifh gear. Fiaally, with time rutting out in the drat half, Appalachian, began to roll. They marched down the Granite Falls 8-yard line where they had first down and goal with S minutes re maining until halftime. Gran ite's defease stiffened, how ever, and the Blue Devils were faced with a fourth down ?itua tion m the ds yard line. On the not flay, quarterback Jim Keary tossed a short pass over the middle to senior end Ron nie fiuit for a touchdown. A running attempt for the extra point was Stopped short and Granite still held a 7-6 advant age with 2:10 renyupm? ip the half. After receiving the ensuing klckoff, Granite Falls tried to start a drive of their own,, but on second down, hard charging Blue Devils' line rt us ed a Granite Falls fivnble which the Blije Devils recover ed. The deddnsiv* wnits for each team dominated play through out the HMtd half. Neither team was a^le to show much offensively during the third quarter. Granite falls' deepest penetration came when they recovered a fumble deep in Ap palachian territory. Junior line backer GaVy Storie then inter cepted a pus and returned it all the w ay to Granite's 40-yard lino. After dieting up one flrat down with a past, the Blue He rn o n 1 intercepted on# of Re try's pattes and regained possession <pf the Ml Mar mid field. Midway through the fourth quarter, a long punt retain by Phil Hampton set up the Blue Devils' final score. Hie clinch er came on a 45-yard screen pass from Reary to Wayne Clawson. Phil Hampton bucked ?ff tacle for the extra point to make the score l#-7. Appalach ian then halted Granite's pass ing attempts and took over the ball on;" again. The game end ed with the Blue Devils on the inarch against a weary group ?f Granite Falls defenders. AH in all. the Blue Devil* found H difficult to move the kail against the rugged Granite Falls defense except through the air where the Devils were reasonably successful. Appala S" lian's defense was superb roughout the game and read ly capitalized on any mistake made by the Blue Demons. The defensive line ? Bob Wil son, Bonnie Hunt, Buddy Storie, Larry Stansberry, and Gary Brown, constantly ha4 the rush on Granite's passer and many tiniM pressed him into hurried passes and fumbles. Lineback ers ? Bill Shrake, Gary Storie, Wayne Clawson, and Alton Johnton, made numerous tack les on running plays and de fended well against passes. Safetymen Chuck Blanton and Phil Hampton constantly kept Appalachian out of a hole with their fine broken field running on punt returns. The Weetern AA finals will be held November 22 with the Devils taking on Sylva-Webst er. Appalachian will be gun ning for its fifth consecutive western title.
