The number of deaths yearly tor all iittnww pcocwM h?v? been declining, thanks to modern ?know-how" and the "antibiotic era"? but, the yearly number of deaths due to accidents have been rapidly increasing. The chief cause c t accidental deaths, of course, is highway. Stat readers will say that it is true that "speed" kills, but rtiis is an erroneous concept? it certainly plays its part in many deaths, but speed is not the chief cause of highway deaths. Hie great killer of persons riding in automobiles involved in an accident is that of "ejection" of the passenger on impact. It is estimated that the probability of receiving serious injury, if ejection could be prevented, would run about one-fifth less in accident eases. Ejection on Impact can be pre vented in most cases if auto safety belts are used The chances for e road smash-up are increas ing daily in America and in creased taw enforcement by cracking down on speeders is not the answer. With approximately 70 million cars on the roads today the num ber of serious injuries does not depend upon the violent smash ups ? many are killed following the relatively minor accident of being "bumped" from behind. Such minor accidents often eject the passenger forward resulting in minor or serious "whiplash" injuries to the opine or fatal blows to the skull. Many groups are now investi gating every possible means of decreasing the ever-increasine death rate from auto accidents. To date, statistics show that safety belts installed in cars pro vide great safety, with the shoul der loop belt providing the most satis factory restraining device for nyjury protection. But from all experiments done to date, it is apparent that the solution will require more than some type of safety belt? it will require public method of eliminating the ob eduoatkm to the problem, some viousiy unfit driver and the chronic aocident repeater from the highway, requiring the in stallation of safety btits ki auto mobiles end the redesigning of automobiles to meet safety re quirements, and in many cases, the redesigning of hazardous roads.
