News Of Our Servicemen A2C Matheson Gets Array Commendation In a special ceremony Aug. 10, Sfc. Lynn Holt Matheson, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gard ner Dean Matheson, Route 2, Vilas, was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. He is serving with the 93rd Engineer Battalion at Ft. Lewis, Wash. Previously he was assigned to the U. S. Con tinental Army Command, Ft. Monroe, Va. In 1958, Sfc. Matheson grad uated from Bethel High School. He was cited at the August honor ceremony for “excep tionally meritorious service while assigned duty as assist ant to the Chief Table of Dis tribution and Allowance Sec tion, Troop Programs Branch. Manpower Control Division, Office Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel”—at Army Com mand headquarters. Matheson entered the Army in 1959, completed his basic training at Ft. Benning, Ga., and is holder of the Good Con duct Medal, with 2 bronze loops. A3C RONALD McCREARY Ends Basic Training Airman Third Class Ron ald A. McCreary, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. McCreary of Boone, has completed basic training and technical school at Amarillo AFB, Texas. The airman entered the Air Force July 13. He was assign ed to'the 3377 School Squad ron at Amarillo where he re ceived his training as an ad ministrative specialist 70230. The airman has been reassign ed to the 6595 Aerospace Test Wing, Vanderberg AFB, Calif. 93437. He plans to attend college while stationed in California. The airman was a 1966 gradu ate of Watauga High School. Promoted to Sp-4 Robert Marion Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Marion Wilson, Route 2, Vilas, has been promoted to SP4 in the Army. In 1962, he graduated from Bethel High School. He en tered the Army in November of last year, completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, S. C.. and is a clerk typist for the Quartermaster School Troop Command, Ft. Lee, Va. SP4 Wilson formerly was employed by the Blue Ridge Shoe Company here. PVT. ARVILLE E. HARTLEY Trains At Fort Lee Pvt. Arville E. Hartley, 19, entered service May 25 at Ft. Jackson, S. C. A graduate of Cove Creek High School, Hartley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest S. Hartley of Route 1, Banner Elk. He received basic training and a six-week general supply course at Ft. Jackson and con tinued this course in Quarter master School at Ft. Lee, Va. He was trained in maintaining stock records for the receipt and issuance of supplies and materials. He also learned typing, gen eral administration procedur es and Army supply storage methods. After a 14-day leave with his family, he will report to Ft. Dix, N. J., to receive ord ers to serve in Vietnam. PVT BERRY R. CALDWELL At Fort Eustis Pvi. Berry R. Caldwell, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley R. Caldwell, Route 2, Newton, completed his 8-weeks of basic training at Fort Bragg on October 21 He is presently re ceiving individual advanced training and schooling at Ft. Eustis, Va., United States Mili tary Transportation School. Private Caldwell and his wife, Julia, were residents of Boone for three years before his induction into the armed services. PHflRmncv 24447S1 BILLY J. COOK JR. Billy J. Cook, Jr. At Officers’ School Billy J. Cook Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy J. Cook. Sr. of Route 4, Boone, left Tuesday for San Antonio, Texas, where he will enter Officers Training School in the Air Force. Billy graduated from Ap palachian High School in 1962 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966. He received his degree in mathematics at UNC and participated in varsity wrest ling for three years, during which he was awarded two letters in the sport. He was a member of the North Carolina Monogram Club. In Vietnam S-Sgt. Raymond G. Fletcher, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hodges of Boone, is serving in Viet Nam with the U. S. Air Force since October. An Air Force pilot 7 years. Fletcher finished his educa tion in Japan and was station ed at Shaw AFB, Sumter, S. C., before departing for South east Asia. His parents are Mr and Mrs. Paul Fletcher of Hic kory. Pvt. Larry Dean Hodges, also a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hodges, is complet ing basic training at Ft. Bragg. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hodges of Baltimore. Pentagon holds 1967 GI force of 500,000 possible. if AIRMAN LARRY HAYES Trains In Texas San Antonio—Airman Lar ry G. Hayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence G. Hayes of Rt. 4, Boone, N. C., has been selected for training at Shep pard AFB, Texas, as an Air Force missile facilities spec ialist. The airman, a 1965 gradu ate of Appalachian High School, recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. His wife is the former Esth er F. Adcock from Virginia Beach, Va. B. H. Harmon Writes Book Rev. B. H. Harmon, former Watauga county man, who lives at 3002 North 37th St., Phoenix, Arizona, has written another book, “Dan Georgen of the Divided House.” Rev. Mr. Harmon, who is retired from the ministry was born in the mountains, and it follows that his new volume should have the Blue Ridge Mountains as a setting. The author uses his min ister hero to expound his views of conflicting ideolog ies. Dan is involved in theo logical struggles, battles against prejudice, a search for a missing fiance, but triumphs.
