Letters To The Editor accomplished. Sincerely yours, Edward A. Anderson 118 Orchard St. Boone, N. C. “Lousy Newspaper” Hasn’t Called Doctor Mr. Rivers: Of all the editors I have known, you perhaps are the most thinned skinned one of them all. I canceled my subscription to your lousy news paper, I find its an insult to my in telligence to take time to read it. I find that you are opposed to high wages—but you sup port high prices.Your paper is “sick”. Florence Steckel Boone, N. C. News Notes A Senior Corps Senator Edward M. Kennedy expressed hope that Congress will give early consideration to a proposal for the creation of a national senior service corps. He believes the talents of older Americans can solve many of the needs of the elderly. i» Governor Endorses Appeal For Hungry By Three Faiths Gov. Dan Moore of North Carolina has officially pro claimed his endorsement of Thanksgiving season appeals of America’s great religion? faiths for support of their programs aiding the world’s hungry, homeless and poverty stricken. The current appeals are the Protestant "Share Our Sub stance” appeal, the Catholic “Bishops' Thanksgiving Cloth ing Collection" and the “Unit ed Jewish Appeal,” a continu ing effort with special em phasis at this period of the year. These independent but com mon-purpose efforts make it possible to provide relief and rehabilitation for millions of hungry and destitute persons overseas. Among those aided are victims of war, flood, fa mine, earthquakes, hurricanes and other diseasters; refugees fleeing oppression and politic al upheaval, and the chronic ally undernourished and un derprivileged. In his official proclamation, released simuultaneously to day in New York to Church World Service and Catholic Relief Services, overseas re lief agencies of Protestant and Catholic faiths, and to the United Jewish Appeal, Gov. Moore said: “We have been able to share some of our abundance with less privileged peoples around the world and I urge that Thanksgiving Day be observed by requesting the patriotic display of the Flag and gener ous support to the special world-wide programs of our great religious faiths to -aid needy persons overseas. “Thanksgiving Day has been a tradition with our people, who have continued to seek and be blessed with favor. We continue to seek the favor and blessing of Divine Providence, while acknowledging the guid ance He has given our belov ed country.” Through their programs of overseas assistance supported by the current appeals, the three faiths distribute food, clothing, bedding, medicines and self-help materials to mil lions in need; give aid to or phanges, hospitals, and clin ics, and carry on widespread projects of refugee resettle ment and rehabilitation. Our Policy Decried The Editor Watauga Democrat Dear Sir: In your “Statement of Pol icy” editorial of Nov. 10 you state: “The columns of the Democrat cannot be used for the purpose of directing peo ple not to trade with some leg itimate places of business, or to advise them to deal with others.” Obviously your ad vertising columns are exempt from the last phrase of this “policy,” which means you are speaking of your editorial and news columns. I cannot believe anyone has requested your editorial sup port of the boycott and it is certainly your privilege to op pose it editorially. But the boycotters did want your newspaper to report, com pletely and impartially, the facts involved in their dis pute. Why was that not re ported? You certainly cannot claim that news reporting pro motes that which is reported, or you would be placing your self in the position of pro moting thefts, shootings, auto mobile accidents, and Republi can victories—however limit ed. The fact that at least 1,600 Watuaga County citizens are against the immoderately high food prices, the added fact that the local boycott is a part of a nationwide grass roots movement, would sup pose the issues to be more newsworthy than the meagre paragraph you condescended to award it. (Or are the citi zens of Boone, like C. H. Barnes whose letter appeared Nov. 17, ashamed of being a part of an American grass root movement?) An examination of the de r plorable statistics you pre sent, in another editorial on Nov. 10, would show that Wa tauga County is not the best of all possible worlds. Accord ing to the figures as you pub lished them, 33.7 percent of Watauga households had dis posable cash incomes of $4, 000 or more after payment of taxes, but a little simple math shows that (and why wasn’t this mentioned?) at least 38.2 percent had net incomes of less than $2,500. Those peo ple, 1,438 of them, should be worried about high food pric es. Perhaps it is time for the Democrat to stop patting it self and the County on the back for a job only one-third done, and see if more can be Leather Control Lifted The Commerce Department has lifted the export controls it imposed on cattle hides, calf and bovine leathers since last March.
