This was revealed in monthly reports issued last week by Em ployment Security Office’Man agers Troy Perry of North Wilkesboro and John Taylor of Mount Airy. The North Wilkes boro office serves Wilkes, Al leghany, Ashe, Watauga and Alexander counties and the one at Mount Airy serves Surry and Yadkin Counties. Perry said his office had a spurt in new applications of 686 in February, compared to 471 the previous month and 377 in February, 1966. This he noted was caused by the signing of high school seniors who will en ter the labor market in late spring. He and Taylor expect the claims load to decrease in March, particularly toward the end erf the month as outside working conditions improve with less inclement weather. r Perry noted that the increase in the active file from 1,217 in January to 1,446 last month as compared to 1,510 the same ]month a year ago — was due primarily to a showdown in in dustrial activity. Layoffs were reported in fur niture and woodworking plants in the five-county area served by the North Wilkes boro office. However they are expected tp be temporary.
