IMPROVEMENTS The regular school building maintenance staff again was supplemented this summer through the assistance of the ln-school Neighborhood Youth Corps program. Most of the schools have been in session during the sum mer months and the regular custodial staff has been of great Kelp to the regular maintenance staff in readying buildings for jhe opening of the regular school .term. Some of the major improve ments completed by the main tenance staff this summer in clude the installation of a new boiler in the Cove Creek Ele mentary School; installation of a new water tankatCoveCreek; School Bells interior ana extenor painting of the Bethel Elementary School; seeding and landscaping of the new physical education area at Watauga High School; clean ing and refinishing of all floors in all buildings; checking and cleaning all heating systems; minor repairs and renovations to all plumbing systems; neces sary repairs to all septic tanks; minor roof repairs to all build ings with needs; completion of improvements to the grounds at Blowing Rock School; perio dic mowing and maintenance of all grounds; interior painting in the Valle Crucis and Blow ing Rock Schools; and prelimi nary work on the drawings and plans, of the proposed vocational educational addition to the Wa tauga High School. Plans and specifications for this project are due for completion some time this month or early in September. FEDERAL During the later part of June, school officials were notified of fShop Early” Program To Aid Vietnam Veterans The Shop Early” program for the Vietnam servicemen is underway in the Red Cross chapter of this county and Mrs. _ Mae Autrey, project chairman, states “There are several items .4hat are yet needed to fill these Christmas bags. *' “It is the third year for the program and last year’s pro gram brought a flood of thank you notes from our service men as well as the command ing officers that included this typical excerpt: ‘Knowing that the people back home haven't forgotten us is the best gift we could receive’. “That comment pretty well sums up what little things can do to help the morale of the fighting men on the front lines through your Red Cross chap ter.” By the help of the civic, so cial clubs, church groups, and individuals, this year the Wa tauga Chapter will make and fill 75 Christmas bags for the servicemen in Vietnam. Any one who has items to contri bute to these bags can con tact the Red Cross office at 264-8226 or call Mrs. Mae Autrey, 264-2892, and the things will be picked up. Boone DeMolays Attend State Association Meet The Boone, J.T.C. Wright, Order of DeMoiay attended the North Carolina Association in New Bern. The boys left on During the conclave, there were three business sessions, two workshops and various sporting events held. The Boone Chapter proved to be one of the best in the state. Boone had three state officers elected. Harry Yates was elected state junior councilor, William Wal ker was appointed as the state junior councilor’s aide and Lar Wedi£ and at 7 p* July 31, at 5ajn. g Sunday, Aijg. 4,, ry Gragg as second preceptor. In the sporting events, Boone took two state championships. One was taken in basketball will a team consisting ot Harry Yates, Danny Robinson, Harry Lyons, . Mikael Miller, Gary Knight and William Walker. The team played two games, win ning a close margin of two points in both games. Tony Young won the state championship in ping pong. Tony played four games, winning all four without difficulty. The Boone Chapter had 24 boys; one Sweetheart, Jane Gil - strap; and Mr. Davis, the ad visor, representing the chapter. C. uie approval of two federal grants in the amount of $180,529 for the operation of two in novative programs under Title HI of the Elementary and Secon day Education Act. Only sixteen Title m pro grams have been funded in North Carolina for the 1968-69 school term and school officials say they feel fortunate in gainir^ approval for two in Watauga. Robert D. Danner recently accepted the position of di rector of the vocational guidance counselors for the elementary schools and other supplies and equipment to complement the program. George Ragan has accepted the position of director of the educational media program which provides for the employ ment of five educational media specialists and one printer and illustrator. These specialists will work mainly in the ele mentary schools t assist regular teachers in viding supplemental materials and equipment to enrich the regular instructional program. These federal projects have been approved for a three-year period on an annual appropria tion basis and are expected to be of great educational advan tage to students and teachers alike.
