VUM Portmuter. The era* tocTnUe. w Are Expanded This Week Appalachian State Ikrtver alty’a Belk Library will expand tta working schedule by 19 hours per week beginning Monday morning (Oct. 13) to accommo date needa of the 6,300 reeldent atudenta on the growing cam pus. Announcement of the expended hoars of operation apparently ends a minor student contro versy which arose on the campus in September when the library's schedule had to be shortened In order to hold salaries of student library workers within budget reqplre The result was a 74-hour per week schedule which forced the library to close at 5-.00 p. m, on Fridays, 1:00 p.m, on Satur days, and at 10:00 p. m. Sun days through Thursdays. Utader the new schedule, Belk library will be open for stu dent use between the hours of 3:00 a. m. and 11:00 p, m. Mondays through Fridays, from 9:00 a. m. to 5:00 p, m, on Saturdays, and from 2:00 to 11:00 p, m. on Sundays. Bead librarian William L, it student assistants tor 4,070 hours per month to keep the library open and at full service, and there was simply not enough i money to pay their salaries. The only alternative was to re duce the number «f hours per week which the library was open:: '■ for students." ' A subcommittee, however, ap pointed by the faculty-student Library and Instructional Ser vices Committee, took the prob lem into hind, studied the ef ficiency structure of the library's 14 departments, snd - has come up with a detailed date of recommendation! which would allow Belle Ubraryto re main open longer without ad ditional salary expenditures. The time study was heaefedby mathematics professor Robert L. Richardson who was assist ed by some 75 students enrolled In two Business Management 41$ classes, “The study tohk an overall three weeks to Initiate and complete, and over 8Gb man hours of work went Into the project," Richardson said. As * result ot the study, certain minor library ser vices will be curtailed, but other more demanded services will be increased. In addition, the library has accepted the com. ndttee’s suggestion ad using more federally sponsored work study assistants and fewer stu dents employed with funds from the university to staff the library.
