EDWIN BUFFLAP HECTOR LUPTON Advertising Mgr. SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year Six Months 7—7- on Entered as second-class matter August ou, 1934, at the post office at Edenton, North Caro lina, under the Act of March 3. 1879 _ THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1941 THIS KEEK’S BIBLE THOUGHT: GOD RULES:— Acquaint now thyself with Him ami be at peace.—Job 22:21. 1 Not News—But Good Reading Readers of The Herald are receiving their paper a day early this week because of Christmas, and by step ping up a day, naturally as much local news as usual could not be included in this issue. However, we are glad to have in this issue a larger number of Christmas greetings than in previous years, which were inserted by Edenton merchants and business houses. Each greeting is a direct message from the particu lar firm" designated and we hope every one will be read, for in each instance it is a sincere wish for a merry Christmas from those with whom you do business throughout the year. Again Christmas Time “Now when .Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Heiod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, in Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet . . . Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them dili gently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child,, and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that 1 may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed, and 10, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him, and when they had opened their treasurers, they presented unto him gifts, gold and franincense and myrrh.” The above account of the birth of the One whom we will celebrate Thursday is printed, not that it is new, but rather because the oftener it is read and repeated the sweeter it sounds and the more precious it should become, as once again we respond to the spirit of Christmas, a season of joy, that is linked with the ob servance of the precious religious event. The birth of the 'Christ Child has a parallel with the war in which America is now engaged, for you will re member that it was not the purpose of Herod to wor ship Christ as he told the wise men, but in his heart he sought to destroy the Child. But God had a hand ! in the matter. Herod was wroth when he learned that he was mocked, even ordering all children killed in the ; hope of destroying Christ, but the Son of God | escaped. Fresh in our minds is the recent supposedly intention of Japan to bargain with America for peace terms in the Pacific, while like Herod, at the same time plans were under way and actually executed to destroy us. Though over 1940 years have elapsed since Herod’s episode, God still is on His throne and here’s hoping America is on the right side, so that a free people will not be dominated, by a blood-thirsty, seftish group of dictators who will spare no methods to attain their ruthless ambition. Even though war clouds hover over us, t'he happiness and cheer that permeates human hearts at this season makes its presence evident, a product of an unselfish solicitude for the happiness of others and a somewhat I . J I WISHING YOU * A MERRY CHRISTMAS | W m ;<• We choose the simple, age-old gp greeting, "Merry Christmas," to hail you, our friends, in this Joyous hoH 'o, day season. We choose these time worn words because we believe jjj them best qualified to carry the luU ' quota of sentiment and Christmas C*OCERV | I THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. C., THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1941 1 tJfEARD and SEEfhjl .Ry “BUFF” ' - - -j Os course* the women are expected to get all excited during the holiday rush, but it is apparently affecting the men. too. Take Beanie White, for instance. The other day he and Leroy Haskett went to Elizabeth City to attend to some insurance business, and when they had finished Beanie rushed out of the office and hur riedly threw his brief case and other things into a car, which he thought was Haskett’s. He messed around for a while and later he and Haskett met and headed for home. Upon reaching Edenton, Beanie looked on the back seat, but alas, there was none of his stuff there. He twisted the few hairs remaining op top of his head and finally came to the conclusion that he made a mistake and put his belongings into the wrong car. He communicated with the Elizabeth City police and, lucky for him, he picked an honest person’s car and later his stuff was returned. Maybe there should not be so many cars of the same color, or ejse Beanie should buy a pair of specs. o Somebody’s just a little mixed up, and it’s either Joe Nixon, whom many will remember as school superin tendent in Edenton and baseball player deluxe, or else Miss .Sue Murphy, newspaper woman in Windsor. Mr. Nixon sent a very nice Christmas card this week which was addressed to the three musketeers —E. T. Rawlin son, Charlie Wood and Paul Olsson. Then about the same time, Miss Murphy sent one addressed to Jim Daniels, E. T. and yours truly as the three musketeers. E. T. is the only one whope name appears on both lists, so I reckon he is one of the musketeers, but wefll have to have a ballot to determine the other two. o Already, I’ve had an argument with Jimmy Peed, our new job printer, despite the fact that he’s a very affable sort of fellow and jumps in to help wherever there is anything to do in The Herald office. The argument all came about because I used his picture on the front page week before last. Jimmy claims that by using his picture I ruined his chances of renting an apartment so that he can move to Edenton, and argues that had I used an ad on the front page instead of his pit fare, he might have been able to rent a place. But just the same, dam it, Jimmy wants to rent an apartment, so if anyone has one to rent, please let someone in the office know about it. o . --- Gosh, aren’t people inquisitive? On Thursday night, just because Paul Olsson and I were gazing into the heavens, several folks noticing us wanted to know what was going on and whether we had spotted an airplane. As a matter of fact, the stars were out in all their glory, and Paul was pointing out and telling me the names of a number of the stars. Besides, he proceeded to give me some astronomical figures, w T hich were just too deep for me to take in, so we dropped the matter. o Os course, compliments of the season have been, or will be received by every Herald subscribed and reader i of this column. But here’s asking you to accept another i one from the fellow who each week tries, and sometimes | very hard, to fill this column, a wish from the heart | for a happy Christmas. Os course, there will be reason spontaneous surge of the spirit of helpfulness. * There are many exhibitions of this commendable in terest in other human beings as is evidenced in baskets of food and toys which will be distributed to bring joy into homes where little mouths might otherwise be empty, and hundreds of toys distributed to bring hap piness into the hearts of little children who would otherwise be forgotten by Santa Claus. ’ Then, too, we notice a generous response to the appeal of the Red Cross, Christmas Seals, Stocking Fund, Salvation Army, orphanage offerings and similar appeals, all of which opportunities give expression to the best teachings of i the founder of our faith by exhibiting a spirit of toler ance, based upop an abiding love of and for mankind. So at this time one’s thoughts inevitably turn to the i song of “Peace On Earth” associated with the angels ' of long aso. That the world is far from a realization | of this happy augury must be admitted but that a spirit of peace is the ultimate aim of our great nation in its war against international gangsters is an omen of hope to which the eyes of men and Women all over the world can turn with faith :and even in these warring times each individual has an obligation to so conduct himself as to bring closer the day when peace shall live in all human hearts. And so in this spirit The Herald again wishes, despite turmoil and strife, a Christmas of joy and peace as He whose birthday we celebrate would have you enjoy. good will that we want to convey. To have served you from time to 's> time has indeed been an enjoyable ;tt experience, and we will strive to merit a continuance ol your patron- jf 09# friendship Juflim com* ingytaw. \ M for sorrow and dis&ppointmentiß in some cases, hut when it is remember ed that He whose birth is being cele brated underwent far more hardships than any of us can endure, and all for our, sake, we have every reason to experience profound joy irrespec tive of our several positions and cir cumstances in life. Let us all be joyful and thankful that things are as well with us ft they are. So hero’s wishing a very merry Christ mas to you all.
