Louis George Wilkins, who is in training at the Naval Reserve School at Northwestern University for the commission of Ensign in the Naval Reserve, spent a few days here last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. ERROR IN RED CROSS LIST Either in tabulating from canvass ers’ sheets or in putting into type, an error was reported in the list of Red Cross contributions in The Her ald last week. According to the list Mrs. George Smith was credited with a contribution of $1.25, while in real ity Mrs. Smith gave 25 cents, and the dollar was contributed, by C. T. Doughtie. The error has no effect upon the total, and The Herald gladly ac knowledges Mr. Doughtie’s contribu tion of SI.OO. FIDELIS CLASS MEETS The Fidelis Class held its January meeting Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Bill Goodwin on Queen Street, i The meeting was opened with prayer by Mrs. W. S. Privott. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and the roll was called by the secretary. New officers for the coming year were nominated and voted on. The officers elected are: President, Mrs. J. Frank White, Jr.; vice president, Miss Goldie Layton; secretary-treas urer, Mrs. William Sexton; assistant secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Jimmy Gibbs; reporter, Mrs. Henry Cuthrell. Mrs. Grady Love and Mrs. Marga ret Dail gave very interesting discus sions on the 45th and 46th chapters of Genesis. Members present were Mesdames Leon Leary, Nathan Dail, Henry j Cuthrell, Jimmie Gibbs, Jesse Har- 1 rell, Kenneth Lsrael', Erie Haste, Grady Love and Miss Gladysteen Hester. Firemen Called Out Two Times Tuesday Edenton’s F'ire Department answer ed a call Tuesday morning at 10:45 to put out a flue fire in the home of Miss Blanche Leary. The fire had started in the Bond apartment but no damage was reported. Another fire alarm, turned in Tuesday at about 3:15, was on Car teret Street to put out a flue fire in a Negro residence. No damage was done. Last Thursday night at 7:15, an alarm was turned in from Gale Street to put out a fire in the garage on the property of W. I. Cozzens. The fire was soon extinguished and little damage was done. Week Os February 8 Is Boy Scout Week i Beginning Sunday, February 8, Boy Scout Week will be observed throughout the United States, and will be celebrated by the Edenton Scouts. Just what sort of obser vance will be staged has not yet been decided, but plans will be arranged for a suitable celebration of the event. Sea Plane Anchorage Now At NYA Shop This week the sea plane anchorage, authorized several months ago by | Town Council, was transferred to thej Edenton NYA shop, where final, finishing touches will be made. The anchorage was partially completed at the Pantego shops and will be launched as soon as completed, ac -1 cording to C. L. McCullers, secretary I of the Chamber of Commerce. Miss Catherine Reaves, a student at W. C. U. N. C., returned to Greens boro, Sunday, after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Reaves. Miss Carolyn Oglesby has returned to Greenville to resume her studies at E. C. T. C~ after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mss. J. N. Oglesby. Gilliam Wood, a student at Virginia Episcopal School, and Miss .Anna Wood, who is attending Randolph- Maeon College, have returned to their respective schools after spend ing the holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Wood. Herbert Hollowell has returned to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, to resume his studies after spending the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hollo well, of near Edenton. Miss Doris Jean Leary has return ed to Raleigh to resume her studies at Meredith College, after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Clarence Leary. School Opens After Extended Holiday After quite an extended holiday, the Edenton city school unit opened 1 its doors again on Monday for the | last semester of the school year. The enrollment, said 'Superintendent John A. Holmes, is just about the same as that of last semester, with new en rollments about evening the number of students lost. The number lost and the number gained was approxi mately seven. Boy Scouts Will Begin About January 10 To Collect Contributions ■ Mrs. J. M. Jones reports that to 1 date Edenton’s Boy Scouts have col lected three truck loads of scrap paper, which is new stored at the Scout cabin. This paper Will be sold 1 as soon as possible and what money 1 is realized will be inxt into a fcnd' to be used in connection with the summer camping trip of the Scouts. Any persons who may have any scrap paper about their premises which they will give to the Scouts should contact Mrs. Jones, who will see that it is taken up. Recorder’s Court In Recorder’s Court Tuesday morn ing, M. F. Flynn pleaded nolle con tendre to the charge of drunken driving, and Judge John W. Graham gave the defendant 30 days, sentence suspended upon payment of SSO and costs. Flynn’s driver’s license was also revoked for a period of one year. James M. Cashwell, a soldier of Langley Field, Va., failed to appear in court to answer a charge of drunk en and reckless driving here on De cember 20, and a capias was ordered issued for his appearance. ! John W. Whitney pleaded guii’ty to! : reckless driving and was given 30, days, suspended upon payment of $25 and costs. J. D. Ward pleaded guilty of oper ating an automobile after his license! had been revoked and received a 30-1 day sentence, suspended upon pay-j j ment of SSO and costs. His driver’s ] I license was also revoked for an ad-1 j ditional 12 months, effective on the j expiration date of his previous li-' cense revocation. In the case of Leroy Williams and' Willis Vance, soldiers stationed here with “A” Company, 30th Engineers, i and John Shepard Bembry, Negro,• who were arrested on December 8 on I charges of assault, County Prosecu tor John F. White took a nol pross with leave for the State. In last Friday’s court, John Perry, Negro truck driver, was found guilty !of non-support of an illegitimate child and ordered to pay $2 per week to the Clerk of Court to be paid over to Eva Johnson, mother, for care of the child. Emma Fleming, 28-year-old peanut mill laborer, was found guilty of contempt of court and was given a; one-day sentence in jail, suspended upon payment of $1 fine. The 60 members of the platoon, re cently under the command of Lieut. Earl W. Ek, and formerly under the command of Lieut H. S. Rudd, while here obtained ground control for aerial photographs of 3,000 square miles in this area. A. Bunch, collection of county taxes ia about SIO,OOO ahead of last year as of Junk' ary 1. In his report to the County. Commissioners Monday he reported collections to January 1 as being $36,517.56 for 1941 taxes. Os taas amount $13,727.99 was colltected dur ing December.
