April 29, 1942. « , Sheriff D. V. Meekins * Manteo, North Carolina , My dear Sheriff Meekins: J ) I am in receipt of your inquiry, which I was very glad to receive, about my colleague and personal friend, Con gressman Herbert Bonner. I am pleased to answer the same. j I I have known Congressman Bonner since I have been a Member of Congress, during which period he served as secretary to his predecessor in office, my very close friend, Honorable Lindsay Warren, whom I consider to be ' t i one of the most outstanding men I have ever met. His loyalty and devotion to Lindsay Warren made him one of the most outstanding secretaries in Washington, equipped him in an admirable manner to succeed Lindsay Warren, !when General Warren retired from Congress. His service in the Congress of the United States has been able and constructive. He has been one of the most loyal supporters in the National House of Representatives of our beloved and courageous President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I can assure you of this fact because as Ma jority Leader it was my duty to see that the important legislation relating to the security of our nation, which the President'recommended from time to time, and par ticularly before December 7th, was enacted into law. Speaker Rayburn and I never had any doubt about the ! position of Congressman Bonner. We could always rely , 1 on him. He never failed us on any occasion. * * In addition to considering Congressman Bonner as one of my closest, personal friends, whose friendship I I greatly value, I consider him to be one of the most re , 1 liable, one of the soundest and one of the most depend t • able Members of the National House of Representatives. •I might also say, and this means a great deal to Con j gress, that he is one of the best liked Members of the i House. I cannot impress upon you too strongly how much I I this means to a Member in obtaining benefits for his Dis trict and his people, to which he feels they are entitled, ' , because it means the assistance of Members from other < I parts of the country in his efforts. During these trying days, when the preservation of our nation is at stake, the country needs in the National i House of Representatives, men of vision, men of courage, 4 t men of loyalty and men of devotion, like Congressman Bonner. Our beloved President needs in Congress men like Congressman Bonner, who have loyally supported him, without which support President Roosevelt would ! I not have been able to have prepared our country to the extent that he had when the vicious attack was made upon us at Pearl Harbor. ( i With kind personal regards, I am, ( 1 Sincerely yours, (Signed) JOHN W. McCORMACK, Majority Leader. C., THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1942 THE SPEAKER’S ROOMS House of Representatives U. S. WASHINGTON, D. C. April 23, 1942 Elder A. B. Ayers, R. F. D. Williamston, North Carolina. Dear Brother Ayers: I have your letter asking me in my opinion if Con gressman Herbert Bonner has measured up since he has been a Member of the House of Representatives. As you know, Herbert Bonner was the secretary and right-hand man of Lindsay Warren for several years here, in which position he learned the ins and outs of all the Government Departments and Congressional duties. Since Mr. Bonner became a member of the House, he has so proved his ability, patriotism and knowledge that he is one of the outstanding new Members of the House and is personally popular with the membership. Any member of Congress who is industrious and in telligent becomes more effective and'more useful not only to his country but to his immediate constituents the longer he is a Member. Sincerely yours, (Signed) SAM RAYBURN The Nation, State and District Need Herbert Bonner | They need his valuable experience, his loyal devotion, his fine ability, his influence i and the friends he has made. It would take another man 10 years to attain the rank he now has in Congress. An over-seas Veteran of the First World War, he knows what 5 WAR is. He went in as a Private and came out as a Sergeant. The whole sorry and vicious campaign that has been made against him has been one of attack by Candidate Blount. The people of the FIRST DISTRICT love a fair fight and 1 a fair deal. They despise short cuts and underhand methods and they will show their feel- | ings at the polls on May 30th. 5 1 ?*, :|BPK f I • i 1 iiii,i if ni M l l i 1 1 1 ,i > "'C " j KfjjlpiF f ( f V- ’ ft ..Jg £sm * 5 RETURN TO CONGRESS THE MAN i WHO HAS AND WILL BEST SERVE YOU. j LET’S GIVE BONNER A ROUSING j VOTE OF CONFIDENCE AND UPHOLD 1 THE GREAT STANDING THE FIRST DIS TRICT HAS AT THE CAPITOL. 5 BONNER WILL VOTE TO PROTECT, \ SAFEGUARD, SUPPLY AND MAINTAIN THE SONS OF THE MOTHERS AND FATH- 5 ERS OF THIS DISTRICT IN EVERY | ARMED CAMP IN THE WORLD WHER- 4 EVER THEY MAY BE. j PAGE SEVEN
