Mr. Haskett was 1 accompanied by W. J. Taylor, superintendent of the courtfy ! school unit. 1... xtkm .l *t« Library $1.50 Per Year County’s Lagging In Salvage Effort Claiming Attention Three State Officials In Edenton to Study Situation MATERIAL NEEDED Assurance Liven That Scrap Iron Will lie Moved at Once That persistent lagging of Chowan , County in practically every phase of i the salvage program has attracted | the attention of State salvage offi i cials was reflected in the fact that ion Thursday of last week three j prominent officials were in Edenton j in order to discover the trouble and j put Chowan County on the active ' list. ' The three officials who came in the interest of the salvage campaign j were James B. Vogler, executive sec retary of the .North Carolina Sal vage Committee; W. S. McCall, dis trict salvage chairman, and Lucius C. Wilson, field salvage representa tive. The trio held a conference with J. Edwin Bufflap, chairman of the Chowan County Salvage Commit tee, and Mayor lairoy Haskett in an effort to begin a program whfen will bring in waste materials neces sary in war production. Both McCall and Wilson were back in Edenton again Tuesday and as sured Haskett and Bufflap that a large quantity of scrap iron which has accumulated in Edenton will de finitely be moved at once, which I should be an incentive rather than j an excuse not to gather scrap metal throughout the county. i Mr. Vogler also emphasized the ; im Portaneo of the need for discard ed clothing, waste fats, paper and Tm. As a result Os the meeting in Edenton, Lieutenant Mitchell, sai jvage officer at the U. rs. Marine Corps Air Station, was contacted and agreed to cooperate with local sal vage officials in the disposition of some of the waste materials which niay be gathered. In the initial scrap iaon drive though getting off to a late start Chowan County gathered a goodly amount of iron hut .since then no ap preciable prepress has been shown along other avenues of the salvage program. I’ossibly the most suc cessful effort is the collection of waste fats under the chairmanship of Miss Rebecca ('ohvell, and even she feels that little interest has been shown and that much more wast, fats should have been turned in. For a few months, a monthly ,„i lection of tin cans was made, but this collection wa- abandoned when it was considered that more vital materials, gasoline, rubner and manpower, \ vure ‘"'"'g d than were salvaj ... A- a result of. the collections only about a good truck load was gathered and these are now deposited on the lown lot at the corner of Broad and W ater Streets. . lo date there! have been three sal vage chairmen in the county, R. c Holland, being the first to be an pointed. H,- xvas obliged to resign due to other duties and was succeed ed by R. X. Hines, but the latter soon resignedwhen he felt that no pro gress was being made. Several weeks ago J. Edwin Bufflap was virtually “drafted” into the position and in order to help straighten out matters as- well as to familiarize himse.f with the salvage program, requested -Mr. Vogler to come to Edenton. which he did last Thursdav. and promised his assistance in am wav it may lie needed . Ene new chairman plans to stage a drive for each waste material needed,, though definite plans will have to be worked out, so that the drives will hardly be held until aftts the Christmas holidays. In the meantime, citizens of the county are reminded that there is a definite need for scrap iron, tin. fats, old clothing and paper, and it is hoped the county as a whole will awake to the need and cooperate in helping Chowan to do what is expected of it. Degree Work Tonight At Masonic Meeting Tonight’s (Thursday) meeting of Unanimity Lodge, No. 7, A. F. & A. M., will be held at 7:30 o’clock, in stead of the usual 8 o’clock hour, according to W. Jim Daniels, the master. The meeting has been step ped up half-hour, due to work in the third degree. All members are urged to be present on time so that the meeting can be started promptly at 7:30.
