PAGE TWO Allowances Made To Returned Veterans In Farming For Selves Special Feature In G. I. Bill Designed to Get Started Veterans'.coming back to our farms! from the war who would like to set themselves up as independent farm ers will find that the readjustment allowance program under the G. I. Bill has a special feature designed to help them get started on their own. These are the monthly payments available to veterans in self-employ ment. It. works' this wav Any veteran who is fully engaged in a business of his own may receive a money pay ment covering the difference between his net income and $10i) for the pre vious calendar month., Many of our farmer-veterans, f.>r the months their ■rop.s and livestock bring no returns receive the whole SIOO Purpose- Head jus t inent To help veterans get established or become reestablished in civilian oc cupations after their armed service, the G. 1. Rill set up a system of al- : •owances to be paid veterans during their readjustment . In North Carp-1 ( lina the Unemployment Compensation Commission handles these readjust- • ment allowances for the Veterans Ad- , ministration. Veterans should apply F to. the unemployment compensation ( claims agents located in the United ■ States Employment Service offices;. throughout the state. The allowances are of two kinds those for the veterans who are trying!, to find the right job; and those for! the Veterans Who go to work for ; themselves but don’t clear as much as SIOO a month at it. A veteran 1 may apply for these any time within two years after his discharge or two! years after the end of the war, which- j ever is the latter date (but not more! than five years after the war has been' ' declared over.> Os course, each vet-! j oran has to decide for himself when ] fia comes home whether he wants to ' go to work right away and claim a!- 1 •owances till he gets set^—either in • a job or for himself—or whether he wants to let them stand as a reserve < against a time he might heed them 1 more in months to come. 1 Now what, is meant by full self-em- ' ployment in agriculture under tin- G. f. Bill? The case of each veteran is considered separately. The purpose of the G. i Bill is clear in that it. was meant to assist veterans who are attempting to set • hem selves, up i n bus i ness. The law ! specifies that an individual must he fully, engaged, in an independent op eration for. profit, and in addition,! ■ oust be doing .those things which are reasonably calculated to promote the success of his undertaking. The fact .’hat a veteran devotes his full time • o farming.activities is not alone suf- ; ficienf to qualify him as self-employ ed A person may be employed on the fare i.;, tli" - ime manner as ho may: be enipio -d ;i> a factory, work ing at n! 1 tis under supervision,; though the lm-ti 'id ,>f determining his c< fTer.
