PAGE TWO GOOD FORESTRY PRACTBES PAY BIG DIVIDENDS, SWS RODBirs, MUSH 1 4 Extension Forester Now Available to Advise Chowan Farmers Jack Sylvester, Extension Forester, for Chowan, Bertie, Martin and Hertford Counties, is available to ad vise farmers in the latest scientific forestry practices, according to Rob ert S. Marsh, assistant county agent. If a farmer has a tract of timber which needs thinnig, culling, or is diseased, Mr. Sylvester will give him advice free. In case a farmer has timber which he plans to sell, Mr. Sylvester will cruise his timber and tell him how many board feet of timber is in the tract, and how it can be most profitably marketed, i.e., for piling, cross ties, or lumber, provid ed the farmer will carry out the rec ommended practices. Due to a very busy schedule, Mr. Sylvester can not give an estimate on the amount of timber a farmer has if the timber is to be clean cut and the ground clear ed. However, if the timber owner agrees to leave seed trees and not to cut the small trees except for thinn ing purposes, then Mr. Sylvester will be glad to assist him. Mr. Sylvester will spend one-fourth of his time helping Chowan County farmers provided they request his help. There are many acres of cut-over, burned off, idle acres of land in Chowan County which at the present time are non-productive. Taxes must be paid on this land regardless of how little it produces, so that some thing of value should be growing on it. Lobolly pine seedlings, one year old, five to twelve inches high, are available to farmers for $2.50 per thousand, delivered. Orders will be taken in the County Agent’s Office until February 25. Mr. Sylvester will furnish the transplanting tools and explain how to use them in or der to set a seedling properly. One man and a boy can set 1,000 to 1,500 seedlings in a day. Seedlings should be set six by seven feet apart, which gives 1,037 plants per acre. Red cedar trees can be set out along ditch banks, beside the farm roads, and other places where they will not be in the way, and in four to five years be sold as Christmas trees at a nice profit. In 1938 a 4-H Club Member in Wayne County set out red cedars on two acres of poor sandy land. Within five years after his j : ——\ ij#-! JAm... Slim ... the figure-minimizing lines. Red cedar seedlings 'are available at $3.00 per thousand, delivered, with a limit of 600 per person. Five hund ’ red seedlings will set about one third of an acre. As a general rule, the cedars can be sold for Christmas trees as fast as they grow, however, they make excellent posts if they are left to grow for several years. Black locust and black walnut seedlings are available at $2.50 and SIO.OO per thousand respectively, If a Chowan farmer wants to get seedlings, he should order them im mediately. Stocks may be used only for forest planting, erosion control, and windbreaks. It cannot be used for ornamental planting, and may not be resold as planting stock. Or ders for less than 500 are not accept ed. The trees will be delivered as near as possible to the date request ed. Important —Orders will not be accepted after February 25.
