Dun bar Greeted By Many Edentonians Edenton’s newest store, the West ern Auto Associate Store, opened its doors for business Saturday, and with a full line of brand new merchandise attracted a steady flow of people throughout the day and up until clos ing time. The store is owned and operated by L. T. Dunbar. Mr. Dunbar re cently visited a number of towns in j which there are no Western Auto I stores, and of the places he visited he was impressed more with Edenton . and decided to locate here. He is a . native of Allendale. S. C., and has his wife assisting him. During the opening day, and since, many people have visited the store , to meet the newcomers and bid them ’ welcome. Both Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar ' are impressed with the hospitality ' shown them and are of the opinibn that they will like Edenton. I. McMullan have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Carolyn Clarke Mc- Mullan, to Robert Lewis Grant, son of Mr. and Mrs. David E. Grant of New York, formerly of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Larchmont, N. Y. Miss McMullan was graduated with the class of 1947 from Barnard College an<j also studied at the Art Students League. Her fiance, an alumnus of Cheshire Academy and Yale University, also attended tfie Art Students League. He served with the Twenty-eighth Infantry Division of the- Army dur ing the war and received the * Purple Heart and the Soldiers’ Medal, j The wedding will be solemnized in New York City in January. Mr. Kramer also calls attention to the importance of wrapping Christmas gifts securely and to insure valuable articles. Mail At Post Office Arriving In Quantity That the Edenton *Post Office will be severely taxed over the holidays is reflected in the early arrival of great quantities of mail. According to Postmaster C. E. Kramer, on Mon day of last week five truck loads of ordinary parcel post mail was re ceived and two trucks of COD pack ages. No extra help has been provided, and the incoming mail continues to increase, so that from now until Christmas the entire personnel will be under a terrible strain. White Births Double Negro In November White births doubled colored during the month of November, according to j the vital statistics report of the local I Health Department. During the month there were 22 white births, compared with 11 colored. In the same period there were four white deaths and five colored deaths reported as well as one colored stillbirth. Chick Production In October Over Million Commercial hatcheries in North Carolina produced a total of 1,034,000 chicks during October, the Federal- State Crop Reporting Service report ed. Prices received for baby chicks on Nov. 1 were described as generally steady to weaker. October production was 28 per cent greater than the hatchery out put in October of 1946 and 20 per cent above the 1941-45 average October production. The Service reported that the demand for chicks for broiler pro duction dropped considerably because of the decline in poultry prices last month. Total chick output in North .Caro lina in the first 10 months of the year was estimated at 33,987,000, up six per cent from the hatch in the corresponding period last year. Prices of sexed cockerel of the heavy breeds were down 50 cents per hundred from October 1, with straight-run chicks of the light breeds i off 30 cents and sexed pujlets of the light breeds down sl. Prices of sexed pullets of the heavy breeds and sexed cockerels of the light breeds rose $1 and 50 cents, respectively, per hund red chicks. Prices for remaining groups were unchanged. Holmes, superintendent of j Edenton schools, announced this, week \ that schools will close Friday After noon, December 19, for the Christ mas holidays.
