Tile Being Used To
Drain Bottom Area
On Chowan Farms
1 Paul Ober First Farmer
In State to Have
“Living Fence”
According to R. C. Jordan of the
Soil Conservation Service, Louis and
y Thomas Francis of the Edenton com
munity laid 500 feet of four-inch farm
drain tile last week on their Satter
field farm on Mexico road. The tile
was installed in a low bottom area
which was of the springy-wet type.
Cultivation operations were often hin
dered on account of the inadequate
drainage. Both Louis and Thomas
believe the drainage of this bottom
will now be materially improved.
Adequate outlet for the line of tile
was found in one of the farm ravines
which runs from Pembroke Creek.
R. C. Jordan and George A. Con-
I ner, Jr., of the Soil Conservation Ser-
JL vice, assisted the Francis’ with" the
l|\ tile installation. Their help in this/
■ instance consisted of making the ne
■ cessary surveys, setting of batter
■ boards for grade and supervision of
I the tile lading and backfilling.
Louis Francis will put in about 800
I feet of this • tile on his home farm
I soon. Here he expects to drain an-
I other bottom area.
1 Recently complete conservation
I farm plans were set up for Preston
1 Monds, A. L. Boyce, Lloyd G. White,
I Sidney White and Noah Goodwin, Sr.
These men will be assisted by the Al
bemarle Soil Conservation District in
making the various conservation im
provements to their farms, as listed
in the farm plans.
Paul Ober set out 300 Multiflora
seedlings about the first of
March. Practically all of the seed
lings are living even though put out
in loamy fine sand. The planting was
made in one straight row and will be
used as 300 feet of fence—“living
♦Aence.” The Multiflora rose seed
lings were supplied Mr. Ober by the
N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission
in cooperation with the Albemarle
Soil Conservation District.
According to Warren W. Currier,
biologist of the Wildlife Commission,
Mr. Ober is the first farmer in North
Carolina to use Multiflora rose as a
fence.
Japanese Beetles
Again On Rampage
Farmers Urged to Exer
cise Own Control
Measures
Japanese beetles have become such
a menace in some sections of North
Carolina that farmers and other pro
perty owners in these areas are warn
ed to exercise their own control mea
sures instead of relying on public
agencies to check the invaders’ de
predations.
C. H. Brannon, head of the Ento
mology Division of the State Depart
ment of Agriculture, said that in
festations have become so widespread
that the joint state-federal control
program is insufficient to cope with
the problem.
“Those engaged in this program,”
he continued, “will have to concen
trate this year on reducing infesta
tion at loading points and preventing
spread of the insects to new areas.
Farmers and other property owners
will have to use individual control
measures to combat the beetles on
their own land. Detailed information
as to the proper methods may be ob

some people make fools of themselves

they think their school days have

IN MEMORIAM
In loving memory of our devoted
husband and father, Jesse Asbell, who
died July 2, 1947.
Two years have passed since you
left us,
And long the time has seemed.
You suffered, oh, so long but bore it
so well,
Trying to have a smile for us
When we were always trying to give
relief.
We have missed you, oh, so much
more than we can tell.
Only relief comes from above is to
live a life as you did,
Prepared to meet you in Heaven
where we shall be parted no more.
