Geddes Potter, chairman of the
Chowan County Red Cross Chapter,
has announced the appointment of
. Dr. Wallace S. Griffin as chairman of
the Chowan County Blood Program.
Dr. Griffin in turn has appointed
nine committee chairmen to serve
with him and include the following:
Recruitment—J. M. Boyce.
Medical Advisory—Dr. George L.
Crane.
Public Information—Mrs. Jimmie
Earnhardt.
Marine Base Activities—Col. G. W.
Nevils.
Health Department Representative
—Mayor L. H. Haskett.
Hospital Representative William
(Speck) Jones.
Club Woman Representative—'Mrs.
Joe Conger, Jr.
Volunteer Services and Nursing
Services—Mrs. Junius Davis.
Public Official—Judge Marvin Wil
son.
Dr. Griffin and his committee re
cently met with Miss Margaret Mar
grave, blood program representative
of the American Red Cross, when
she explained the blood program and
its advantages to Chowan County,
and congratulated Dr. Griffin on the
progress already made.
The Blood Program in Chowan
County will get underway in the fall
after the Tidewater Blood Center of
the American Red Cross, in Norfolk,
Va., officially opens.
Three times a year the mobile unit
from the Tidewater Center will visit
Chowan County to receive donations
of blood from local residents and
within 72 hours after the first visit of
the mobile to this community a sup
ply of blood will be received in the
local hospital, whjch will be free of
charge to patients who need it.
This program, Dr. Griffin announc
ed, has received the full endorsement
of the Chowan County health authori
ties, and he feels sure he and his
committee will receive full coopera
tion from the entire community for
such a worthy program.
Mrs. W. E. Hassell
Dies In Hospital
Funeral Services Held
In Baptist Church
Tuesday
Mrs. Mollie Harrell Hassell passed
away in Chowan Hospital Sunday
night at 8 o’clock following an ill
ness of three weeks. Mrs. Hassell
was 74 years old. A native of Chow
an County, she was the daughter
of the late Sara Evans Harrell and
Thomas A. Hassell, and the wife
of the late W. E. Hassell.
Surviving are one step-son, James
L. Hassell and two step-daughters,
Miss Paulina Hassell and Mrs. J.
L. Bouton. Three sisters, Mrs. C. N.
Griffin of Edenton and Mrs. Charles
Johnson and Mrs. Olivia Hobbs of
Hertford and three grandchildren al
so survive.
Funeral services were held in the
Edenton Baptist Church Tuesday af
ternoon at 3 o’clock with the pastor,
the Rev. R. N. Carroll, officiating,
assisted by the Rev. C. W. Du'brig.
Interment was made in Beaver Hill
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were C. T. Griffin,
Charles Johnson, Harrell Johnson,
Fermor Hobbs, Jr., Thomas Harrell.'
Edwin Harrell, Morris Small and
Parker Harris.

the largest rural church field in the
World. Recently the field was divided
with Rocky Hock going full time
and the Rev. Mr. Lemons called as
pastor of the Center Hill and. War- ■
wick churches.
Mr. Cale’s success was well marked, 1
for he continued as pastor for 12 <
fruitful years until 1944, when he
resigned to go to Southern Seminary
at Louisville. This completed a minis- j
try of 29 years for father and son j
at the three churches. j
Mr. Cale'has been pastor of the <
Culpeper Baptist Church of Culpeper, <
Virginia, since 1947, when he grad- i
uated from the seminary.
