PAGE TWO The 801 l Weevil Is No Santa Claus Damage to N. C* 1949 Cotton Crop Estimated At About $23,901,000 The National Cotton Council in an unofficial preliminary estimate pre dicts that insect damage to the 1949 North Carolina cotton crop will amount to approximately $23,901,000. Even in this day when astronomical figures are commonplace, 23 million dollars is a lot of money. Divide it up and take it out of the Christmas stockings of some 287,000 North Ca rolina farm families and this disas trous damage strikes home even more sharply. The boll weevil is no Santa Claus. He and his * cotton consuming com panions, according to the Cotton Council estimate, this year took $lB out of the stocking of every man, woman and ehild living on a North Carolina farm. The Cotton Council, with the goal of an integrated program of cotton insect control, is sponsoring the third annual Cotton Insect Control Con ference in Birmingham on Decem ber 19-20. Government and state re search and educational agencies, the cotton industry, insecticide and equip ment manufacturers will meet to . plan a fight against cotton pests. ‘ Achievement of the conference goal and reduction of such appalling cot ton insect losses as were inflicted this year would mean more dollars in th-. pockets of North Carolinians. No effort should be spared to effect these savings. Faith is a gift of God which man can neither give nor take away by promise of rewards or menaces of torture. —Thomas Hobbes.
