Lions Club Speaker
James Powers Succeeds
Fenton Larson at
School
Members of the Edenton Lions Club
were favorably impressed with the
new principal of the locail high school,
James Powers, who, with superinten
dent John A. Holmes, were guests of
Coach George Thompson at the regu
lar meeting of the Club held Monday
evening.
A native of Wallace, Mr. Powers is
a graduate of Wake Forest, with A.
B. and M. A. degrees'. While at Wake
Forest he was a member of the tennis
team and served as captain during his
last two years.
He also engaged in track and base
ball while at College.
Mr. Powers has 12 years experience
in teaching and as principal in David
son, Durham and Wake Counties, he
taught science and mathematics and
coached all forms of athletics in the
above mentioned schools.
“I believe that we should stress
scholarships first”, said Mr. Powers
in his brief, but interesting talk. (
“I think that athletics should merit
a place second to scholarships, since
the development of one's body should
keep pace with that of one's mind.”
During World War 11 Mr. Powers
volunteered for duty in the Army and
served as lieutenant in (he vocational
training of civilian and enlisted per

I time that I had the opportunity to ob
serve the fine work that is being done
1 for the rehabilitation of these vet
erans who were more unfortunate
1 than myself during the war,” said Mr.
Powers.
“I should like to commend the Lions
, Club for their assistance in securing
1 glasses for school children, not other
wise able to provide themselves”, said
Mr. Powers in remarking upon the
project of aid to the blind, which the
club is sponsoring.
Superintendent John A. Holmes ex
pressed great satisfaction in being
able to procure a man of Mr. Power’s
experience and training in the middle
of a school term, in replacement of
Principal Larson, who resigned to ac
cept a superintendency elsewhere. Mr.
Powers just completed post graduate
work in school administration at Caro
lina when the vacancy occurred.
A Baptist, Mr. Powers is married,
but has no children. His wife, the
former Blanche Johnson of Lillington,
is a graduate of Duke University and
at present is a member of the faculty
of Lowes Grove High School in Dur
ham County.
Ernest Ward, Jr., gave the usual (
3-minute talk end afforded the mem
bers considerable fun with his jokes,
as well as some inspiration.
