PAGE TWO New School Principal Lions Club Speaker James Powers Succeeds Fenton Larson at School Members of the Edenton Lions Club were favorably impressed with the new principal of the locail high school, James Powers, who, with superinten dent John A. Holmes, were guests of Coach George Thompson at the regu lar meeting of the Club held Monday evening. A native of Wallace, Mr. Powers is a graduate of Wake Forest, with A. B. and M. A. degrees'. While at Wake Forest he was a member of the tennis team and served as captain during his last two years. He also engaged in track and base ball while at College. Mr. Powers has 12 years experience in teaching and as principal in David son, Durham and Wake Counties, he taught science and mathematics and coached all forms of athletics in the above mentioned schools. “I believe that we should stress scholarships first”, said Mr. Powers in his brief, but interesting talk. ( “I think that athletics should merit a place second to scholarships, since the development of one's body should keep pace with that of one's mind.” During World War 11 Mr. Powers volunteered for duty in the Army and served as lieutenant in (he vocational training of civilian and enlisted per sonnel. Superintendent John A. Holmes ex pressed great satisfaction in being able to procure a man of Mr. Power’s experience and training in the middle of a school term, in replacement of Principal Larson, who resigned to ac cept a superintendency elsewhere. Mr. Powers just completed post graduate work in school administration at Caro lina when the vacancy occurred. A Baptist, Mr. Powers is married, but has no children. His wife, the former Blanche Johnson of Lillington, is a graduate of Duke University and at present is a member of the faculty of Lowes Grove High School in Dur ham County. Ernest Ward, Jr., gave the usual ( 3-minute talk end afforded the mem bers considerable fun with his jokes, as well as some inspiration. C., THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, 1950. ; Joseph Lloyd Baker Dies In Norfolk Joseph Lloyd Baker, 53, died Sat urday night in Norfolk at 9:20 o’clock. Deceased was an automobile salesman ' and a native of Greene County, N. C. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Wil letta H. Baker, three sons, J. L. Ba ker, Jr., and Jimmy Baker of Eden ton and G. C. Baker of Norfolk; three brothers, Arthur Baker of Norfolk, George Baker of Farmville and Capt. Woodrow Baker, U. S. Army, station ed in Kentucky; two sisters, Mrs. Mervin Tugwell and Mrs. Lester Gay, both of, Farmville. One grandchild al so survives. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Willi ford Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Gordon, pastor of the Rocky Hock Baptist Church, officiating. Inter ment was made in the family ceme tery in Rocky Hock.
