The study was under taken to obtain information that could be used,in planning farm organiza tions which include turkeys. Anson and Union were selected because they comprise one of the main turkey-pro ducing areas in the State. Pierce points out that turkey pro duction has increased rapidly in North Carolina during recent years. Cash income from the sale of turkeys ad vanced from an annual average of slightly more than a half million dollars before World War II to 2.6 million dollars in 1948. The announcement came from Chas. H. Warren, Director of Vocational Re habilitation at Raleigh. I Os those rehabilitated 594 were un employed at the time services were started, and 1,053 had never worked or had worked only part time. The 612 who were on jobs when their re- I habilitation was started were in dan ger of losing their jobs through disa | bility, were endangering their own health or safety and that of others, or were in unsuitable and unsatisfact ory employment, Mr. Warren said. Mr. Warren estimated that the an nual rate of earnings of the rehabili tated group was increased from $411.- 32 before rehabilitation to $2,077.92 after rehabilitation. This increased rate of earning will continue to add to the purchasing power of the State for years, Mr. Warren said.
