PAGE TWELVE Tobacco Plant Situation Critical in Chowan County Tobacco Specialist In County For Inspection Last Week The tobacco plant situation in Cho wan County is quite critical on many farms, according to County Agent C. W. Overman. R. R. Bennett, tobacco specialist from State College, visited several plant beds last week with the county agent. Mr. Bennett concluded that the poor stand of plants is very largely due to the lack of sufficient moisture and from midge larva dam age. Thare appears to be no differ ence in stand of plants in the same beds where a part of the bed was treated with wood chemicals last fall and the area left untreated. On the same farm where some plants are in dry areas and other plants in more moist areas the moist beds have a fair stand of plants. Mr. Bennett believes that proper lo cation of plant beds and the estab lishment of a sufficient water system to furnish a water supply for irrigat ing the beds as well as for spraying is a must. The specialist and the county agent discussed plans for bed location so as to provide an adequate water supply and to allow rotation of plant bed areas. The county agent will be glad to outline these plans and render necessary assistance to any tobacco growers who call on him. Mr. Bennett has traveled pretty well over the North Carolina tobacco area. At the present time about the only areas with any possibility of surplus plants is in the southern part of the state around Lumberton and Whiteville. Mr. Bennett and the coun ty agent agree that in bringing plants in from other areas it is very possible and very likely that growers will bring in disease and implant them in their soils. This is. a hazard faced and the question is whether it is bet ter to take this chance or to go with out sufficient plants to set the crop on the farm this year. Plants in the lower North Carolina area may be available around May 1 and growers can make contacts then if they so de sire. Mr. Bennett is trying to keep a complete check in the tobacco areas for surplus plants and will keep the County Agent advised where a source of plants appears. j The' tobacco committee and the pro gram planning executive committee with Mr. Bennett met on Thursday right and worked out an outline long- . range program for tobacco producers 1 in Chowan County. One member of the committee expressed himself as being very much benefitted by this 1 meeting and that he feels the pro gram outlined for tobacco will be most worthwhile to those growers who will study and follow the recommenda tions.
