PAGE TEN Projects For Flood Control Approved Bill Now Ready For the Signature of Presi dent Truman A public works bill, authorizing the construction of four river and harbor and flood control projects and sur veys for three others in northeastern North Carolina has received the final approval of Congress, it needs only the President’s signature to become law. Congressman Herbert C. Bonner re ported immediately following pas sage of the biU that four projects in the First Congressional District of North Carolina were authorized for construction. They were: (1) An $860,000 Oregon Inlet and Manteo Bay project which is expected to accumulate annual benefits of over $193,400, including a $150,000 increas ed catch of fish; (2) A SIIO,OOO flood control pro ject in the Pasquotank River basin which will enhance farm land from the Tadmore section of Pasquotank Ceunty to Elizabeth City. (3) An $80,600 project in Far Creek near England which will widen and deepen the creek channel from the Pamlico Sound to about 200 feet below the bridge at Englehard; and (4) A $112,400 Inland Waterway project in the vicinity of 'Fairfield, N. C., which will recover for cultivation some 2,500 acres of farmland. The bill authorizes a river and har bor survey in Middle Creek and flood control project surveys in the Per quimans River and FRbrets Creek at Eden ton. The pro jects were not authorized in time to be included in the appropriations MU this session. , 178 Receive Old Age Assistance In April During the month otf April 176 per sons in Chowan County benefitted by i old age assistance, when $4,531 was • distributed. There were also 29 aid . for dependent children cases who re i ceived $1,229 and 15 aid to Wand'cases I who received $435. During the month the local Welfare i Department rendered general assist ance to eight persons in the amount of $207.42. Other financial aid in cluded four persons hospitalized in the county, four hospitalized oultsidie the county and medicine for two persons. 'Service cases included eight child labor certificates issued; three chil dren referred to the Bland Commission for eye examinations; three received care from Veterans Rehabilitation in cooperation with the Welfare Depart ment, and 30 children received individ ual service.
