Family At Hyland Improving Home Adopts Motto “Better Home For Better Living” “Better Farming and Better Homes' for Better Living,” is the motto which! the Percy Harrell family of the Ry- 1 land community is practicing. When! Assistant Agent Bob Marsh visited I this family recently, the yard had' several ditches running in several di rections. Further examinations show ed that these ditches were dug for water lines to complete the long-wait ed need- of running water. A neat pump house was constructed of con crete blocks and this will add to the attractiveness of the farmstead. Atj the present time water is piped to the kitchen, back porch, stock bam and to each of the two poultry houses. Modem plumbing, a bathroom and hot water, will be added later. Mr. and Mrs. Harrell have long waited the convenience of running water in the home, and they, as well as the two boys, Kermit and dene, who are inci dentally good 4-H Club members, are more than pleased with the progress already made. Gene very aptly expressed himself when asked about the new water sys tem as he replied, “It sure will save me a lot of time and trouble from pumping and carrying water to my 4-H poultry flock.” Gene and Ker mit have both made an excellent rec ord with their laying flock of Per menter Reds, and expect to have ano ther similar project this year. Ker mit first had a poultry project in 1950, when he received 100 pullets from the Home Feed & Fertilizer Co. Although he had a good project, he did not talk his Dad into building a laying house until the fall of 1951. Since the laying house has been built all the members of the Harrell fami ly are enthusiastic over the 4-H poul try Projects and they plan to continue in the poultry business. This ’'s just one example of how an average size family in Chowan County can increase and expand their farming operations which results in a higher standard of living. The Har rells I’ve in the northern end of Cho wan County near the Gates County line, and no doubt their example willj be followed by other farmers in the community both in Chowan and Gates counties. Much of the credit for the victory went to Douglas Abbott, di minitive forward, who bagged 30 points. The youngster’s performance was sensational, hitting for goals from long range and at almost any angle. The visitors led 33 to 21 at half time. For the first 10 minutes it was nip and tuck, but gradually the visitors forged ahead to sport a comfortable lead. Bubber Dobson was high scorer for Edenton with 15 points to his credit. Bobby Bunch trailed with seven points. Preceding the main event, the Kin ston Jayvees also defeated the Eden ton Jayvees by a count of 47 to 21. When does your driver’s license expire?
