KEEPING IIP ON FARMING I
With Unde Walt I

I declare it sure has been dry late
ly. In fact, I believe it’s about as
dry around my neck of the woods as
I ever remember it
Me and Fannie was talking about
it just last bight I was tryin to
figger when it was the last rain we
bad and dog if I don't believe it’s
been nigh on to six weeks. We did
have a little sprinkle here a few
days ago but it weren’t enough to
even lay the dust.
You oughts see our garden. Our
beans looks like they’ve been spray
ed with 2, 4-D and it seems like all
of our tomatoes are gonna rot on
the vine.
And Our roastin ear patch, which we
were really countin on this year, is
just plum pitiful lookin. Them little
old stalks of corn out there are twis
tin up and gittin browner lookin by
the day. I’d give a yankee nickel if
I had some way to grit some water on
it, but Lord knows my poor old back
won’t ’low me to tote or haul water
to do that corn any good. I just
keep hopin tomorrow will bring us
a shower of rain, but it seems like
it’s been mighty slow gittin here.
And just as if it weren’t dry enough,
it’s been so bloomin hot too. I look
ed at our little old gauge out there
on the pump house yesterday evenin
and the red was up to 98—and that
was in the shade. Fannie said she
read it one day this week about dinner
time and it was settin on a 101 then.
I reckon we all complain too much
about the weather. We ought to be
mighty thankful that we’ve been bless
ed as good as we have. All of us,
pretty nearly, have right good pros
pects for crops this year and well git
some rain. We’ll just have to be a
little more patient and be thankful
for it when it comes.
Actually, they’s some good to this
kind of weather we’re havin now af
ter all. I been havin my oats cut
this week and the weather’s been just
ideal for combinin grain. Course it’s
ip.

been awfully hot, but I don’t ever
remember cuttin grain when it weren’t
hot.
These combines are really the tricks.
They do a good job of cleanin your
grain as they cut it. And just think
how much work it saves.
Me and Fannie was settin out in the
shade this mornin watchin Sid Mel
lons cut a little patch of our oats
down back of the house. He’d make
a round with that combine and come
back to the comey nearest the house
and out would dump three and four
bags of oats every time.
I looked over there toward Fannie
and she was just smilin. I said, “What
you laughin at, Fannie?” Then she
said, “Walt, I was just thinkin about
the times me and you had to take a
size cradle and; cut that same field of
grain out there. You’d be swingin
the cradle and I’d be comin along
behind tyin up the bundles. Then
we’d both pitch in and shock it up
I declare it just makes me feel good
that somebody was smart enough to
fix up a machine that would do all
that work and then some in less than
a third of the time. The biggest
pleasure though is that I know you
don’t have to be bothered with swing
in that old heavy cradle any more.”
I said, “Yessir, Fannie. We’ve got
a mighty lot to be thankful for, so
: while we’re thankin, how about you
1 gom in the house and fixin us up a,
pitcher of lemonade. I’d like to carry I
. them fellers on the combine and trac
i tor a little somethin to help cool them
off.”

SIR HONEY-BEE
Twas early on one summer mom
Sir Honey-bee went questing,
And every flower that fields adorn
He sweetly found arresting.
He deeply quaffed from flower cups
That grew in fields of clover,
And like a king who richly sups
He drained them over and over.

Too Much Service
A good little girl was hurrying to
school in a state of extreme agitation.
“Please, God, don’t let me be late,”
she murmured as the school bell be
gan to ring in the distance.
At that moment she tripped over a
stone and fell flat.
“Please, God,” she exclaimed in an
injured voice, she got up and dusted
