July 4th Program At Colored Pl^^ Mayor Haskett Schedul ed to Dedicate New Tennis Court Edenton colored Woman’s •Club will sponsor a program on the playground on Friday, July 4at 6‘j3o P. M. AH children, parents and friends are in vited to come. The program will con sist of singing, talks, and crowning of the queen. Besides group sing ing, the Gospel Trumpeters, William Reeves, manager, will sing. The dedi catory prayer will Ibe offered by the Rev. S. N. Griffith. Mayor Leroy Haskett will dedicate the tennis court and midget softball ground. The Rev. J. E. Tillett will address the group. The crowning of the queen will be an interesting event. Those taking part in this event are Misses Kay Charlton, DeLois Guy, Jo Ann Hurdle, Brenda Leary, Phyllis 'Madry, Barbara Roberts and Kay Francis White. The queen having the highest amount over $15.00 will receive a ten dollar gold coin and will be crowned by Mrs. S. N. Fayton, 1951 Woman of the Year. Free lemonade will be served to all. To Farm At Advance t , Charlie Small, of AdVance communi ty, has begun putting some of his eggs in another basket by adding a beef cattle enterprise to his fanning operation. During the last year Mr. Small has seeded about 15 acres or more tq Ladino clover and grass pas ture. He purchased about 20 good grade heifers and a registered Here ford bull. Mr. Small made the mis take of breeding some of his heifers too early but in general he had a fair calf crop this spring. He plans to bring his pastures up to about 40 or more acres for a herd of between 30 to 40 breeders. Extension plans for constructing a feeding shed were de livered to him last week. Mr. Small’s farming operation con sists of the production of peanuts, cotton, tobacco, vegetable crops, com, hogs and beef cattle at the present time. With this diversification he hopes to have a well balanced farming operation. NARROW ESCAPE George Watkins of Oxford was fortunate to escape serious injury Fri day night during an electrical storm when his Cadillac left the highway near Chowan Hospital and turned over several times. Busta mente, a citizen of Mexico, is to be discharged from the Corpß to allow him to fulfill his obligations under Mexican draft laws.
