State’s Inland Ports Subject Os Study fly Group This Week Michigan Expert Help ing To Increase Use Os Harbors Flans for greater development and utilization of North Carolina’s inland ports and waterways are being studied fully this week, George R. Ross, di rector of the State Department of Con servation and Development, has an nounced. Roes said that Michigan’s Governor G. Mennen Williams has loaned Bert Robb, director of the Michigan State Waterways Commission, to the State for the purpose of making a study of North Carolina’s inland ports and harbors with a view of making them of greater use to those who use them to gain their livelihoods. Robb, a former Naval officer and ports authority, is accompanying members of the Board of Conservation and Development’s Water Resources committee on a tour of several North Carolina inland ports. The tour is be ing made aboard the department’s commercial fisheries boat, the Cape Lookout, and began Wednesday at Elizabeth City. Among the State’s inland .ports to be visited are: Hatteras, Englehard, Manteo, Elizabeth City, Oriental, Van demere, and possibly some others. Fishermen and others using the inland ports are invited to meet the com mittee and Robb and give their views with regard to development and great er use of the ports. Water resources committee mem bers making the trip are: iAubrey L. Cavenaugh of Warsaw, chairman; Charles H. Jenkins of Ahoskie, vice chairman; Walter J. Dam toft of Can ton, Ferd Davis of Zebulon, and Mrs. Roland McClamroch of Chapel Hill. Buxton White of Elizabeth City, a board member and W. H. Riley, the department’s hydrologic engineer and head of its water resources division, will accompany the group on the tour. Ross plans to join the inspection party before the tour ends at Morehead City on July 27. Robb will report to the C. and D. Board on Monday, July 28, at the Morehead City meeting. Robb is said to have gained a nat ional reputation for directing the de velop Cmt and use of Michigan’s many inland ports and Ross said “we are very fortunate to be able to have Mr. Robb’s counsel and advice in our ef forts to make our own inland ports more useful." Ross said the department has been at work for some time with a view of making the commercial fishing lanes and small harbors so useful that they will bring larger financial returns to those using them.
