PAGE FOUR -48 Ghowan Farmers Ask Assistance To ConservefarmLand 65 Farms and Approxi mately 4,000 Acres Affected Forty-eight Chowan County farm ers have requested assistance from the Albemarle Soil Conservation Dis trict within the past six weeks, says R. C. Jordan, County Conservationist working with the U. S. Soil Conser vation Service. These farmers have requested help in developing soil and water conserva tion farm plans for farms owned and operated by them. The requests will cover sixty-five farms and approxi mately 4,000 acres of land. Most of the farms are located in the Ryland community of the county. Farm plans will be developed in! the near future on each of the sixty- ! five farms. R. C. Jordan, County 1 farm planning technician, will assist each farm owner to seit up his plan. Technical assistance will also be fur nished for the application of soil and water conservation practices as called 1 for in the farm plans. In every case'where assistance is j requested careful studies of the con- 1 servation problems will be made. Technicians of the Soil Conservation Service assigned to the Albemarle District will make every effort to help each applicant to plan his farm to the I very best advantage. No two of the! farm plans will be exactly alike; they will differ as the soils and the soil and water conservation problems dif fer. However, all plans will be de veloped, in so far as possible, with one common or central theme in mind. For example, in the application of drainage practices, the planning technicians will lay out a drainage system based on the needs of the land, the geographic location 'and with due consideration for the | economic factors involved. Prelimi nary and final surveys will be made to accomplish these drainage objec tives. Also, in erosion control work assistance will be given to lay out contour rows or terraces or other de vices as needed. j As of July 1, 1952, over 400 soil 'and water farm plans have been de veloped with Chowan County farmers, according to th s County farm plan ning technicians, R.
