Motor Vehicle Deaths Are Double National Average Nearly 8 Die For Every 100 Million Miles of Travel Statistically speaking almost eight persons were killed per 100 million miles of vehicular travel in North Carolina during the first nine months of the year. This means simply that for every’ 100 million miles of travel amassed by the state’s more than 1.200,000 registered vehicles, nearly eight per sons died as the results of an auto accident. The exact figure, reported by the National Safety Council gave North Carolina a 7.8, considerably better than South Carolina’s 12.5 and slightly worse than Virginia’s 7.3. Traffic fatalities over the nation were up 2 per cent as the third quar-1 ter closed. North Carolina’s per cent age increase over 1951 was exactly, double that of the national average , —4 per cent. The nation suffered 37,300 motor vehicle deaths last year and North 1 Carolina had 1,071. . Funeral Held For Joseph T. Alexander Joseph Thomas Alexander 77, died at has home on East Queen Street Monday afternoon of last week after an illness of six weeks. He was a native of Tyrrell County, but lived in Edenton many years. Surviving are six sons Jack Alex ander, Ernest Alexander, Woodrow Alexander, John W. Alexander, Les lie Alexander and Rupert Alexander of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Kennedy of London Bridge, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Janie Wilson of Columbia and Mrs. Coatneyan Dil lon of Columbia, and 17 grandchildren. 'Funeral services were held at - the Williford Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock with burial in the family cemetery at Mackeys.
