SOP For EM’S To Use TOTs On CCFs, NK’s Group of Army Abbre viations Mystifying To Uninitiated “Here’s HOW," said ARTY instruc tor as the men were leaving a TIP on the BAR. The foregoing sentence does not mean that an art professor proposed a toast as a drinking party broke up. It is reference to a howitzer by an artillery instructor at the end of a Troop Information Program on the Browning Automatic Rifle. Army abbreviations, like all short cuts in communication, are a complete mystery to the uninitiated. Even those once familiar with Army abbreviations might be misled if their knowledge is not up to date. NATO, for example, the present short-hand for North Atlantic Treaty Organiza tion, during World War II denoted the North African Theater of Operations. With the police moving from their present quarters, the idea was advanced that Edenton ■ needs an incinerator. The present trash pile has outlived its usefulness, with the site filled up and the nearby 1 creek being gradually encroached upon, thus helping to retard the flow . of water after heavy rains. Too, there * , has been no little complaint in that ’ section of town on account of offen , sive odors from the trash pile as well . j as the large number of rats which 1 breed there. With a stack already • available, it was stated that a goodly 1 portion of the expense of an incinera- , [ tor would be saved. * W. H. Oakley, Jr., of Hertford ap peared at the meeting in behalf of Charlie Jernigan, whose certificate of ! public conveyance was revoked in No vember after a liquor conviction in 7 court. Mr. Oakey asked for renewal " of the certificate, but the councilmen { decided to wait until the June meet ‘ ing to consider the case. The councilmen amended: an ordi s nance relating to peddling and so ' liciting orders at private residences. 3 This amendment requires peddlers to r obtain a permit. The permit must be obtained from the Chief of Police. r Town Clerk Ernest Ward was in structed to write a letter to proper postal authorities relative to provid ing an adequate driveway at the Post Office, where present space does not permit large mail trucks to drive off the strett. i The Street Department was in structed to place concrete in front of the Post Office from the curb to the sidewalk the width of the building. The Street Department was also in structed to continue investigation for a remedy of flooded conditions at the Chas. H. Jenkins Motor Company. Though the councilmen transacted a goodly amount of business the meet ing adjourned before 10 o’clock. METHODIST SOCIETY WILL MEET ON FRIDAY NIGHT The Woman’s Society of Christian Education of the Methodist Church will meet Tuesday night, January 20, at 7:30 o’clock. The meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Parker Helms at Westover Heights and all ’ members are urged to attend. SEEKING GAMES Without a basketball game for Fri day night, Coach George Thompson early this week was endeavoring to secure a game to fill an open date. Any nearby school desiring to play the Edenton teams is requested to con tact Coach Thompson immediately. EDENTON JAYVEES WIN Edenton High Schools Jayvees won a grilling game Monday when the youngsters defeated the Camden Reb els by a score of 36 to 34. The visit ors led at half time 17-14, but the Edenton boys rallied in the second half to nose out a victory. Little-town society is a great game. Goodness is not a comparison. STATE COLLEGE ANSWERS .. Question: What is the purpose of the annual State Farm Census ? Answer: The main purpose of the State Farm Census, now in its 13th year, is to meet the local demand for annual county statistics on agricul ture in greater geographic detail than has been provided by any other ser vice. The Federal agricultural census does not provide data by counties at suffciently frequent intervals to meet the statistical needs of the county and State agricultural agencies, and oth- Pack tht pantryl Fill the freezer! There is a strong demand for agri cultural statistics covering fanning operations on the county level. This ■ information is requested and used by individuals, public agencies, and by i local groups as wtll as State and nat ■ ional organizations. The annual col i lection of county farm facts enables ; agricultural workers at all levels ; to prepare effective farm programs I wh'ch are in the interest of the farm ■ ers’ welfare. In a basically agricul- tural State any improvement in the economic well-being qf fanners means an improved economic status for all other citizens as well. The State Farm Census provides the only satisfactory basis for compiling reliab’? annual county estimates of crop acreages and other farm facts. Thus the increasing demand for an nual county estimates of crop acre ages and other farm facts. Thus the increasing demand for annual countj estimates of the acreage and produc tion of all crops is being met. The need for reliable county estimates is especially emphasized by acreage al lotment and control programs. These programs can be more fairly adminis tered where annual Farm Census rec ords are available.
