Our Neighbors I By MISS REBECCA COLWELL Chowan Comity Home Agent 1 appreciate the interest that has been shewn In this column. When you get tired of it and stop reading it please let me know because I don’t always want .to write it. However, I am encouraged when someone tells. me they enjoy it, as Mis. Claude Norman did recently. Others have been very kind, too. Have you contributed to the March of Dimes? I’m sure H isn’t neces sary to explain that this is a very worthy cause and one that is of vital interest to each of us. I believe the amount collected to date is about $1600.00. That’s fine, but not enough. Can’t we make it $2,000.00, which is the quota for Chowan County? We don’t like to ask, and maybe there are some who won’t want to give, but remember that it’s much better to give than receive. We have been very fortunate in Chowan County and have not had to call on the National Foun dation for funds. The Home Demonstration Clubs are being organized at their meetings this month for a house-to-house canvass in each community. Can’t some of you do this before your club meeting? That would be fine because the drive is already about 2 months late. IWie are asking the following to serve as com munity chairmen and get others to help in the house-to-house canvass: Advance community, Mrs. BriStoe Perry; Beech Fork community, Mrs. W. H. Saunders; Rocky Hock com munity, Mrs. Kermit Perry; Center Hill community, Mrs. Cameron Boyce; Cross Roads community, Mrs. E. L. Winslow; Enterprise community, Mrs. Scott Harrell; Gliden Community, Mrs. Maebelle Winslow; Gum (Pond community, Mrs. Herman Nixon; Oak Grove community, Mrs. W. T. Bunch; Yeopim community, Mrs. M. W. Jack son; Ryland community, Mrs. Gordon Boyce. Since I don’t remember who asked me for a recipe for 7-minute frosting I’m giving it here and I hope she will see it. 'Someone else might want it, too. Seven Minute Frosting 2 egg whites (unbeaten) 114 cup sugar 5 T. cold water % T. cream of tartar or % T. Karo , syrup i 1 T. vanilla Put egg whites, sugar, water, and| cream of tartar in upper part of double boiler. Beat with rotary egg beater until thoroughly mixed. Place over rapidly boiling water, beating constantly. Cook for 7 minutes or until frosting will stand in peaks. Re move from fire, add vanilla and beat until consistency to spread. Be sure to go to the ‘“County Sing” on Monday night, March 16 at 7:30 in Chowan High 'School auditorium. If you can’t sing, maybe you’ll learn, if you can’t learn to sing you can help me listen. Mrs. W. H. 'Saunders and Miss Beulah Evans, County Music Chairmen, are planning this meeting and C. W. Overman will lead the singing. It is amazingly “all-purpose” for lining broilers and roasters (saves scouring them), wrap ping food to be reheated, wrapping and covering food in refrigerator, and many other uses; it self-adjusts, holds in moisture, and saves much cleaning work. Use plastic food bags for left overs}, fresh foods and bread; they take prac tically no storage space, and can be a help when you are “pushed for enough space” in your refrigerator. Keep a measuring tool in all staple foods. For example: A tablespoon in coffee can, a cup and sifter in flour container, a quarter cup in sugar cabi net, etc. Thus you eliminate extra reaching, handling and washing.
