Governor Mead ; Urges Support Os Red Cross Drive Chief Executive Desig nates March as Red Cross Month* Governor William 18. Umstoead, in issuing his first official proclamation since taking office, has designated March as 'Reid Cross month in North Carolina and called upon all Tarheels to “give support to their Red Cross in its 1963 Fund Campaign." The Governor’s proclamation cited “the neighborly, humanitarian services of the American Red Cross” and point ed out that Red Cross “(helps to keep alive in the minds and hearts of peo ple the elements of service, sacrifice, love and mercy.” iAt the time of issuing the proclama tion, Governor Urn Stead received a report from K. C. Lattimer, ARC di rector of field services in North Caro- j lina, outlining the accomplishments of | Red Cross chapters in the State dur ing the 1951-52 fiscal year. According to this report, almost 28,- 000 active servicemen or members of their families called upon the Red Cross last year for welfare assist ance, often involving such emergencies as illness, death, or pressing family problems. In handling these requests, home town chapters worked with staff as signed to Korean battle areas, military hospitals, and installations in the U. S. In addition to these servicemen, 5,500 Tarheel war veterans received claims or welf are assistance. Chapters in 86 counties, Lattimer reported, collected 83,000 pints of blood last year for the fighting forces and for civilian needs. On January 1 this year, these chap ters started stepping up their defense blood collections to obtain additional blood needed for processing into gam ma globulin, which will be used in the prevention of paralysis from polio myelitis. Chapters in all North Caro lina counties now are collecting funds to help finance this program, which will cost the Red Cross aibund $7,- 000,000 for equipment, personnel, and processing of blood. A total of 12,000 Tarheels qualified last year as Red Cross first aiders, 750 as first aid instructors; 3,000 completed courses in home nuraing; and 17,000 completed swimming and lifesaving courses.
