PAGE FOUR Demonstrations In TobaccoOnderWay Searching For Methods To Combat Black Shank Disease “What tobacco variety must I use? This question confronts every tobac co grower at the beginning of each year,” says County Agent C. W. Ov erman. “The black shank disease is prevalent in most of our soils where tobacco is grown. Growers, generally, are using a black shank resistant variety but apparently have not found one that they deem most ideal for their farms.” In order to give growers an op portunity to observe several differ ent varieties growing in this county several tobacco demonstrations have been planted. The varieties being used are Virginia Gold, White Gold, Vesta 8, Vesta 1, Oxford 1-181, Ox ford 1, Number 0504, Dixie Bright 102 and Dixie Bright 101-2. One of these demonstrations was set with Watt White of Enterprise community last week. Mr. White is also using in comparison with these varieies. Oxford 182 and Gold Dollar.
