SECTION ONE— 4-H Members Study Damage To Cotton Plan to Make a Square Count Once a Week For Several Weeks Two national 4-H award programs of special interest to girls have been ap proved for 1953 by the State Exten sion Service. They are the bread dem onstration and dress revue. Objectives of the demonstration program are to help 4-H Club girls acquire the skills involved in making breads, rolls and other baked food. Participants learn to give effective demonstrations showing some phase of what has been learned and its rela tion to the family dietary needs. i In the dress revue program, which is open to all girls participating in the 4-H clothing program, members learn to dress appropriately in keeping with a well-planned family budget, and to develop poise, proper posture and hab its of good grooming. The popularity of this program is reflected in the en rollment of girls last year which to taled 669,259. County Extension agents will fur nish complete information concerning these programs. Mrs. W. M. Smithwick Os Merry Hill Dies Mrs. W. M. Smithwick, 68, died in the Windsor Hospital Tuesday morn ing at 8 o’clock after being critically ill for two weeks. She was a native of Bertie County and lived in the Merry Hill section. ( Besides her husband, she is surviv ed by three sons, Ralph Smithwick, ' Bernard Smithwick and J. Britt Smithwick of Merry Hill; two daugh ters, Mrs. H. H. Taylor of Williams ton and Mrs. Steve White of.Colerain; three brothers, Jim Britt and Milton Britt of Merry Hill and S. J. Britt of . Rocky Mount; five sisters, Mrs. Cecil : White of Merry Hill, Mrs. Norman Phelps of Windsor, Mrs. G. E. Myers ' of Portsmouth, Mrs. Winifred Spruill ‘ of Norfolk and Mrs. Harold Lupton of Edenton. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Lamer Sentell, pas tor of the Merry Hill Baptist Church, of which deceased was a member, of ficiated. Burial was in the family cemetery at Center Hill. - -- METHODIST SOCIETY MEETS The Woman’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church held its monthly meeting in the church Tuesday night, when 17 members were present. The theme of the meeting was “They 1 Forsook All and Followed Him.” The program was in charge of Mrs. W. C. Moore and the devo "tional was led by Miss Mamie Hogg. A feature of the meeting was the presentation of a gift to Mrs. Sabini Hansen. Mrs. Hansen is leaving for her home in Florida after spending over a year in Edenton, during which J time she has been vitally interested in the society and other activities of the church. During the meeting Mrs. W. C. Moore sang a solo, “I’m Thine 0 Lord,” and Mrs. Frank Elliott sang “Where He Leads I Will Follow.” At the conclusion of the meeting refresh ments were served. VACATIONING IN CANADA Dr. and Mrs. A. F. Downum and two children, Linda and Jerry, are spending a vacation in Canada. They are expected to return home the lat ter part of this week. While on their trip Dr. Downum attended the annual < Amefican Optometric Society’s con vention in Rochester, N. Y. NO MASONIC MEETING TONIGHT Unanimity Lodge, No. 7, A. F. & A. M., will not hold a meeting tonight (Thursday). The master of the lodge, C. T. Griffin, announces, however, that a stated communication of the lodge will be held Thursday night of next week at 8 o’clock. RETURNS FROM HOSPITAL ' Friends will be pleased to know that Mrs. A. S. Hollowell was brought home by ambulance Wednesday from DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, where she has been a patient for two weeks. Mrs. Hollowell’s condition appears somewhat improved.
