liFamMids” Index Os Rices Is Up 1 Point For July Slightly Higher Prices Received For Some Farm Products The “All Farm Products” index of prices received by North Carolina farmers during July was up 1 point from the preceding month. The July index, at 260, compares with an index of 259 in June, 1953, and an index of 295 in July of last year. Slightly higher prices were received for most meat animals, dairy products, poultry items, cotton lint and some grain crops. However, these increases were off-set to some extent by lower prices for wheat, soybeans, apples and sweet potatoes. Slightly lower prices for wheat and rye resulted in a 1 point decrease in the grains commodity index. The cotton and cottonseed index in creased 4 points due to a half-cent in crease in the price of cotton lint. Cot tonseed, at $66.00, was unchanged from the previous month while beef cattle and hogs, at $14.70 and $24.00 per hundred, were 50 cents and $1.20 above the June 15 prices respectively. The poultry index advanced 18 points due to slightly higher prices for both chickens and eggs. The dairy products index was up 1 point as a result of a 1 cent increase in the price of butterfat and a .1 cent increase in the average price of milk retailed by farmers. Soybean, apple and sweetpotato prices declined during the month, causing the miscellaneous commodi ties index to drop 11 points. The av erage price received for Irish pota toes and peanuts was unchanged from the preceding month. The ratio of prices received by North Carolina farmers to prices paid by U. S. farmers rose 1 point dur ing the month. Legal Notices North Carolina, Chowan County. STATE COLLAGE Community, county and state fairs will soon attract our attention. Many gardeners will enter exhibits of fruits, vegetables and flowers; others will not go to the trouble but will stand around the exhibits and say: “I have better turnips, potatoes or cabbages than those at home.” Haven’t you heard them? Everyone should be public spirited and place his best pro ducts on exhibit at the nearby fair. Here are a few suggestions that may be helpful in preparing your ex hibits: Read the fair catalog over carefully and especially the informa tion about the classes in which you are making entries. If the class calls for five tomatoes, a peck of potatoes, a pound of pecans, then be sure that you enter that many—no more or no less. Unless the class calls for the largest specimens, do not exhibit over sized fruits or vegetables. Exhibit the best market size. In any exhibit the fruits and vegetables should be uniform in size and shape and color, free from all insect damage and di sease, free from bad bruises, and true to type. In an apple exhibit the stems must be on each apple. Unless they are 1 muddy or dirty, it is not necessary to ! wash Irish and sweet potatoes. In ■ fact, sometimes washing shows up the : defects more. It is usually necessary : to know what variety or fruit or vege i table you are exhibiting. I have seen ’ many entries disqualified because they I were not of the proper variety. For i a few suggestions, certain conditions s are called for. Tomatoes should be ■ ripe, bell peppers green, pimiento pep pers red, hot peppers red or yellow according to variety. Root crops such as turnips should have tops removed because the leaves will wilt badly be fore the first day is over. Os great importance is the care in packing 'IHE CHOWAN HERALD. EDEN TON. N. C.. I’hey can be brought into the house in groceries, or fresh vegetables and fruits.' Household pets are good farriers and even people will bring them in unwittingly on their cloth- j ing. t Accumulations of dirt and filth will naturally attract them outdoors. Bugs will rarely breed in a well kept home, but will enter in so many ways that the homemaker must be on constant guard against them.
