Ancient and Mod'tr* Damascus < ' ... 1 1 d ’•> OLDEST AND NEWEST METROPOLIS: Damascus, capital of Syria, one of the Bible Lands, is reputed to be the oldest con tinuously inhabited city in the world but in some respects it is among the most modern. The resident section, portrayed above, is criss-crossed by broad boulevards, public parks, flowering gar dens and gleaming new apartment houses. Not far from this scene is the American Embassy. The city is being re-constructed along modern lines but its ancient treasures are being preserved. Among the sights of the older section arc the Biblical Street called Straight, the House of Ananias and St. Paul's Wall. It was on the road to Damascus that Paul saw a blinding light (Acts 9,3) and was converted to Christianity. Senior Class Play Delights Crowd At School Thursday Cast Does Excellent Job of Acting In Hi larious Farce Gould women realy handle the. governmental affairs of our coun try? Those who saw the play “Ah! Men!” presented by the sen ior class of Edenton Junior-Senior* High School Thursday night would definitely say no. However, our State Senator Margaret Chase Smith Would probably Say yes. But our beloved Senator did not see those poor frustrated women try ing to straighten out the many headaches that accompany a high governmental position. “Ah! Men!” was a farce, of course, and a most unusual one to say the least. It was thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end. , The cast did an excellent job of acting, particularly Estelle Stall ings as Susan Betsford, a Senator, and Faye Haste as Eleanor Z. Haz litt, President of the United States. Though intimate friends, these two women were hitter enemies po litically. The senator was opposed to tin; president running for an other term and did her best to up sot the presidential campaign. To get the gist of the story one had to project himself into the . 21st century where the women . wore the pants and the men were considered the weaker sex. As the story unfolded it was plainly seen that tlie women had l ml t ' l<> nffairs i of the government in a messy state.
