Efforts Being Made PpMAUf Amlipatimic IYGifCW nfiptiuaiiuiij For Drainage Relief County Agent and Soil Conservationist To Cooperate Chowan County Commissioners; railed on James Griffin, Soil Con servation Technician and County Agent C. W. Overman to assist in contacting farmers preparatory ti reactivating applications for Fed eral assistance in clearing streams of trees and debris caused by the 1955 hurricanes, according to Coun ty Agent- C. W. Overman. Form letters have been prepar ed, for farmers to use in reporting poor drainage conditions resulting from the 1955 hurricanes. Mr. Grif fin and Mr. Overman have set up a committee of three farmers on each of the ten watersheds which applications have been made for Chowan County. .On Wednesday,; January 16, these two agents will 1 meet with each of these commit-1 toes outlining the proposed proved. I ure each committee will be asked! to take. Each committee will be I given a sufficient number of form| letters to he prepared by the j farmers on their respective water sheds. Bunch, j Route 2, Edenton and Pvt. Onrery D. Hassell, son of Mr, and Mrs. I James Hassell, also Route 2, Eden- I ton, recently participated with the j Bth Infantry Division in “War i Hawk,” a two-week field, training j exercise in Germany. Bunch, a machine gunner in 1 Company E of the division’s 13th ! Regiment, entered the Army in i February, 1956, and completed bas ic training at Fort Carsdn, Golo. He attended East Carolina College at Greenville. Hassell, an automatic rifleman in Company E of the division’s 13th j Regiment, entered the Army in February, 1956, and arrived over seas last August. He was a farm er in Edenton. GUM POND MEETS Gum Pond Home Demonstration Club met for its January meeting with Mrs. Herman Nixon. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Mar vin Smith presided. The meeting was opened by all singing “Follow The Gleam.” Mrs. Marvin Smith read for a devotional from the sixth chapter of John, first verse ! through the fifteenth. The Club Collect was repeated in unison. The roll was called with eight members present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mrs. Herman Nixon, club secre tary, gave each one present their new year book. Mrs. Ellie Bunch, home beautifi cation leader, gave an interesting report on the spacing of tall shrubs near the house. Miss Maidred Morris, home agent, pointed out this year’s work, explaining the various things that have been planned. She also ex plained the duties of the leaders of the club. # A social hour followed with the hostess serving delicious refresh ments.
