Threat Os Vice » Our committee has been continu ing its investigation of this sordid activity. I am certain that you have been* following the hearings; ’I twill not outline here the evidence we have heard. There is one thing " that all good citizens should learn /with renewed emphasis. It is that V'Hiie tentacles of crime and the un ••derworld can corrupt in high and low places and that the battle ■against vice and corruption is a “threat to legitimate organizations. Tn this particular phase of our in vestigation, we have been inquiring into the activities of some of the leaders of the Teamsters Union and their tie-in with the underworld. It must be shocking .- for the law abiding members of this union to j 'learn of the apparent deep pene tration of the underworld into their Unio/ in tjie Pacific Northwest. 11 j tgiust also be shocking to the good j peapld of- Portland. Repeated It fan be said that the story will uidoubted'y be repeated in oth er places as our inquiry unfolds. “I hope that we can be instrumental j|n helping to destroy this cancer that is seriously threatening the Very vitals of so ma4y of our cities. I re/er to the infiltration of the, -- underworld into high places of in fluence and control. As the overflowing crowds jam the committee hearing room for the testimony, many are amused and find considerable humor in the stories of vice and corruption. The-eyoung man approached his prospective father-in-law. “Mr. Smith,” he said, “your daughter has promised to be my wife.” ' “Well,” growled the girl’s father, “it was your own fault. What did you expect if you kept hanging around here every night,” “He asked for it” is a common expression and a true one. Time and again we groan over the fate which has “befallen”-Us. Things do trusted with responsibility. New Laws? The work of the investigation is for the purpose of determining to what extent present laws needs re modeling and what, if any, new; legislation is needed to curb the in filtration of the underworld into j legitimate labor and management j activity. If it has the side value | of calling attention ’to our coun try the necessity for constant vigi lance to prevent; thp snrend of this! plague, the hearing will have fieen j very worthwhile. Power Os Syndicates I am reminded that so much of| our attention has been devoted to other pursuits by the demands ofj the day that the country has been lulled into a passive mood toward the dangers of crime and the crime syndicates. They are real: they do exist; their toll of life and charac ter is .astounding. Moreover, they have great nower.
