The Edenton High Hornets will
open the 1957 home 'baseball sea
son Thursday, April 18, with the
P. W. Moore High School of Eliz
abeth City. All home games will
be played on Hicks Field at 2:00
P. M. The Hornets defeated Sun
_ ' bury 14-9 Tuesday.
When weather permits the Hor
nets’ squad is hard at work trying
to get ready for the coming season.
The pitching staff, Thomas Holley,
John “Buck” Felton and Thomas
Nixon have been showing much
poise and balance. Infielders Capt.
Haywood Harrell, Thomas Harris,
Sherman Horton, Willie Overton,
Roy Lee Collins and George Simp
son show the best form to date.
Flychasers Ernest Goodwin, Henry
Overton, John Beasley and Willie
Jenkins are showing promise.
James Drew will be the starting
catcher assisted by Donald Roberts.
The team will be coached this sea
son by Howard K. Wilson and the
team manager will be William Bon
ner assisted by James Mayo.

flock enterprise to increase income.
A hog raising enterprise may be
adopted or hogs increased. Any
additional enterprise or increase in
present ones will count.
Using improved practices on
present enterprises will count. For
example, a family has their soil
tested for crops to be grown this
year and they follow the soil test
recommendations for lime and fer
-1 tilizer. Controlling insects on
crops, planting adapted hybrid corn
and controlling plant diseases are
other examples.
Farm and home records must be
kept to show the achievement..
This will be included under the j
farm and home management phase. I
Also included will be the economi
cal use of family income.

form must be returned to the agri
cultural worker' by May 1.
Agricultural workers have ap
proved the contest for Chowan
County. They will be glad to as
sist participants with their plans
for increased, income nnd in putting
their plans into action.
Farm families who are interest
ed should contact the county
agents’ offiee or one of the other
agricultural workers and get set upj
by May 1. The contest participa-l
tion does not involve any obligation
on the participant’s part. Those
who increase their income by par
ticipation will win the additional in
come whether they win a prize or
not, so they can’t lose.

Rev. E. S. Parker Dies
After Lengthy Illness
The Rev. Elias Spring Parker J
pastor of the Gale Baptist
Church, died Thursday afternoon in
Chowan Hospital following a j
lengthy illness. A native of Cho-1
wan County, he served as pastor of.
the Gale Street Baptist Church for!
20 years and pastor of St. John’s j
Church for 10 years. Prior to en
tering the ministry he taught school
in Pitt, Camden and Chowan coun
ties. He was also a past master
of the John R. Paige Lodge No.
13 and a member of the Shrine.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Fan
nie A. Parker; a daughter, Mrs. Sy
bil S. Ervjn, and two brothers, Al
bert and Addison Parker.
Funeral services were largely at
tended at the Gale Street Baptist
Church Sunday afteiyioon, when
many prominent friends attended.
At the sprvice quite a few friends
paid tribute to deceased. Burial
was in Vineoak Cemetery.
COUNTY DEBT REDUCED
West Byrum, Chairman of the
Chowan County Commissioners,
was on Monday to pay
$3,165 on the county’s indebtedness.
The amount represents road, bridge
and culvert bonds and coupons due
May 1.
