Shown here is the rescue the following morning of an exhausted victim of the flood, which swept into the town of some 5,006 persons SO fast many didn’t have time to evacuate. <fcda photo> Chowan Negro 4-H Team In Contest The third annual State-wide, dairy cattle judging contest was! held a few days ago at the State i College Dairy Farm, Raleigh. Tl,e teams consisted of 4-H boys and girls coming from the 52 counties of the state where Negro farm and home agents are employed. The classes of ’ cows judged were Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstine; and Jersey. The teams making the highest scores were declared first, second and third class teams. In this contest the first place team was from Granville County, the second place team from Anson County and the third place team was from Pitt County. The highest scoring team was awarded a beautiful trophy and each member of the first place team, including the agent, receiv ed a gold medal. Each member of the second team received a sil ver medal and each member of the third teem received a bronze medal. Medals were awarded to the first three highest scoring indi-j vidual on any team for making the highest score for judging the; different classes of dairy animals. Peter Littlejohn from the St. John Community of Chowan County was the third highest scoring individual in the contest judging Jersey classes of cows. For this Peter Littlejohn was awarded a bronze medal. The team from Chowan Couiv ty consisted of Peter Littlejohn, James Wills, Jr., Ernest White and William Newby. Chowan Women Attend Workshop The second Annual Eastern District Handicraft Workshop ended Thursday after a three-day session at the Roanoke Island 4-H Camp. Some . 250 home demon stration club women and agents from 16 Eastern district counties attended, according to Io 1 a Pritchard, N. C. Agricultural Ex tension Service food conservation and marketing specialist. The workshop, designed espe cially for home demonstration club women in the eastern part of the state, began Tuesday. Club women and agents -partici pating in th-i activities from Cho wan County were: Mrs. H. T. Hollowell, Tyner; Mrs. M. M. Nix on, Rt. 1, Edenton; Mrs. Roland Evans, Rt. I, Edenton; Miss Maid red Morris, home agent, and Miss Jacqueline Pugh, assistant home agent. Various craft classes held dur ing the week included such sub jects as alumnium chasing and embossing, aluminum etching, basketry, copper enameling, ham mered and tooled planters, dried arrangements, leather craft, pa per raffia, plastic jewelry, dec orated plates, remodeling hats, braided and hooked rugs, silk screening, stool bottoming and tube painting. This workshop and one held in the western part of the state earlier in the summer are-unique in North Carolina as home dem onstration activities. Truth is always the strongest ■ argument. —Sophocles.
