ed States for three years and will

About the year 597 B. C., the
Babylonians carried into exile the
largest and most influential group
of Jewish captives, among them
being King Jehoiachin and the
prophet, Ezekiel, who was destin
ed to become the foremost pro
phet and religious leader of the
exile.
While we do not know much
about Ezekiel, it is believed that
he was of high rank, the son of a
priest and probably trained to be
a religious leader. Ezekiel ranks
with the great prophets of the
Old Testament, and is regarded
by many as the father of latter
day Judaism.
While the life of the Jewish
people, as exiles, was not partic
ularly burdensome, they naturally
longed for the time to come when
they could return to their own
land and to their beloved Jerusa
lem. For a time, there was a
spirit of optimism among them,
believing that the dire prophecies
of Jeremiah would not be ful
filled, and they would soon be
able to return home.
However, when the news came
to them that Jerusalem had been

: to say the things he believed God
wanted him to say.

l warnings to them in a time of
; danger—even though they didn’t
i want to be warned. So, today,
; God warns his people of the dan-
I gers which follow their drifting
• away from him, their failure to
obey his laws and of following
, their , own pleasures and desires.
Ezekiel felt deeply his respon
. sibility as a spokesman for God.
! His was the task of warning the
children of Israel of the grave
consequences of their sins. Al
though his was the task of warn
ing, his was not the guilt if they
. failed to heed his words.
