Major and Mrs. S. L. Schuster entertained at a cocktail party on Saturday, April 19, in their home from 5 to 7 P. M. About 30 guests were present. NAAS welcomes Ist Lieut, and Mrs. J. G. Morgan and their son, Jonathan, who arrived in Edenton on April 14. Lt. Morgan will be attached to Squadron 225. Major and Mrs. J. P. Aynes, formerly of NAAS, now of Nash ville, Indiana, are the new par ents of a baby boy, John Peter, born on April 8. Mrs. Eva Perron of Spencer, Massachusetts is visiting with her son and daughter-in-law, Lt. and Mrs. Ed Perron. Major and Mrs. R. W. Shields and daughter, Linda, left Edenton on Tuesday, April 22. Major Shields is being transferred to Japan while Mrs. Shields and Linda will make their home in California until his return to the States. NAAS welcomes 2nd Lt. J. M. Solan who comes ' from Chase Field, Beesville, Texas and 2nd Lt. D. A. Endersen who comes from Pensacola, Florida. Both of ficers arrived in Edenton on April 3 and will be attached to Squad ron 225. The Officers’ Wives bridge club will meet this Friday at th* Offi cers’ Club. Mrs. Carol Dennis will serve as hostess. Lt. Col. and Mrs. W. A. Free entertained at a Sukiyaki Party in honor of Major and Mrs. R. W. Shields on Friday night, April 18. Guests present were: Major and Mrs. George Dauphine, Major and Mrs. John LaVoy and Lt. and Mrs. William Holmes. Mr. Cope land introduced the Chowan High School teachers, after which Mr. Tayor introduced the principal speaker. . Dr. Barker directed his remarks j principally to handicapped chil- ' dren of the state. He said there ! was a great deal of concern about children who need different kinds j of education, some with physical I and others with mental handicaps. 1 He pointed out the need for crip pled children, children whose speech is a handicap, the visually handicapped, those hard of hear ing and the biggest problem, the mentally retarded children. He pointed out that many of the latter group are not able to keep up with normal children, but that they are periodically moved up and in some instances when they reach the compulsory at tendance age they cannot even read. Dr. Barker said special class room and teachers with special skills are needed to correct the situation, and that at present there are 33 classes set up in the state with 370 children in attend ance. j Bov Scout News By BILL GOODWIN The three Explorer Scouts who are working their way to 1 Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, Billy Dail, Alex Kehayes { and Bill Goodwin, will be selling ; toilet tissue during the week- [ end and on into next week: Your support will be greatly appreciated. The cost of the' tissue will be a silver donation. There is still some of the pea nut brittle left and anyone wishing a box from any of the Philmont boys should call 2462, 3249 or 3195. The cost of this \ delicious candy is one dollar a, box. The Explorer Post is currently working hard on the apprentice rank. A hayride is planned for May 9. The Post elected three candi dates for the Order of the Ar row membership at the meeting Tuesday night. They are Dallas Stallings, Joe Campen and Wal ter Holton. Mrs. John Barnette and Mrs. Richard Batdorff entertained at, a luncheon in honor of Mrs. R. W. Shields on Thursday, April 17 at the home of Mrs. Batdorff.
