Chowan County Presented Merit Certificate For Outstanding ’57 Record Highway Traffic Safety Chowan County has been pre sented a certificate of merit for “outstanding accomplishments in traffic safety” by the N. C. State Motor Club. The handsome framed certifi cate was awarded in recognition of Chowan’s record of having no highway fatalities during 1957, one of only five counties in the entire state with such a fatality free record. The others are Hyde, Avery, Clay and Graham. At a ceremony held in Sheriff J. A. Bunch's office Monday morning, the certificate was pre sented to Sheriff Bunch by Lewis Scruggs, Rocky Mount division manager, on behalf of the motor club and the National Automobile Association, with which it is af filiated. Also participating in the cere mony weye Jesse M. Wilson of Edenton, N. C. State Motor Club representative in Chowan, Hyde, Terrell and Washington counties, and Patrolman Thos. E. Vaughan and David O. Williams of the State Highway Patrol. “It is a real pleasure to present this award to Chowan County for the fine record in traffic safety that has been achieved here,” said Mr. Scruggs. “It takes the clos est teamwork on the part of the county and city officials, law en forcement officers and the public in general to go that long without i a fatality.” Mr. Scruggs also contended the newspapers for the forceful manner in which they consistent ly bring safety messages to the I public’s attention. ' West Byrum, Chairman of the Chowan County Commissioners, was unable to attend the meet ing. In accepting the certificate Sheriff Bunch paid tribute to the highway patrolmen and local law enforcement officers for Chowan County’s fine record. IN SUFFOLK PARADE Hcywood Ziegler, Jr., riding his horse, Princess, rode in the Suffolk Centennial Parade Mon day, May 12. The parade was over a mile long, with 12 bands, and was considered one of the largest ever held in Suffolk.
