Cancer Drive Is
Now In Progress
With the month of April set
aside by Congress to raise funds
for research, education and spe
cial assistance in the fight against
cancer, the local campaign is now
in progress.
People are being helped right
here in Chowan County by the
American Cancer Society. Forty
per cent of all funds received
during this crusade will be re
turned to Chowan County for
treatment of cancer patients and
education.
Crusade dollars are spent to
keep doctors up-to-date on new
cancer diagnosis and treatment j
techniques. They bring free
dressings and comfort to cancer
patients. They support a nation
wide program of cancer research
being conducted by more than
1,000 senior scientists in leading
hospitals, laboratories and uni
versities. They train young sci
entists to fight cancer in research
laboratories in this state and
elsewhere.
Mrs. J. D. Elliott, Chowan
County Chairman, also points out
that only accidents kill more
youngsters than does cancer. The
American Cancer Society is cur
rently spending over 1,500,000
per year for research related to
leukemia. Millions of dollars
