Bufflap and Mr. BiU Bunch, members of the Town Council, who requested the Board of Public Works to furn ish an estimate of costs involv ed to furnish the first section of the M. G. Brown Company, Inc., proposed subdivision, (first section being approximately 13 building lots) sewage and wa ter. Chairman Byrum informed Mr. Bufflap and Bunch that the estimated costs would approxi mate $13,500.00 exclusive of the cost of furnishing and installing necessary sewage .pumping sta tion. In the discussion, the fact was brought out -that if the en tire area of the proposed M. G. M, due to storm damage to your companies ] 110 KV line between Suffolk, ]Va., and Winfall, N. C. Your attention is respectfully ! directed to our letter of May - j 9, 1950 in connection with a power failure on May 5, 1950. - We wrote again on July 3, 1952 ! concerning a similar outage. I Our records, which are certain jly incomplete, show that since ] ’ September 4, 1950 there have been fourteen (14) interruptions! of service to this community and area which lasted more than an hour, some of them aa much as five (5) hours. In view of the operational ex , perience your company has had, trying to maintain service to an area as large as this, with only one main feeder line.' it seems that, your efforts should be di rected toward the installation of an additional power line source for' this section, having an ex posure to storm some distance from the present facility. We, therefore, respectfully nrp e you to make a effort in this direction and will 4 ‘ „ • THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, WORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY AUGUST 11, 1959. aMI be grateful for any information concerning your progress. Ay diet t VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY Williamston, N. C. July 31, 1959 Mr. Thomas C. Byrum, Jr., Chairman Electric & Water Dept.. Town of Edenton Edenton, North Carolina Dear Mr. Byrum: I wish to acknowledge and thank you for your letter of July 14, 1959, in which you discussed the service outage which oc curred on Tuesday afternoon, June 30, -and also our plans con cerning an additional source of supply to your area. A second 110 Kv. line is to Ibe constructed from our Pons- I mouth Power Station through Hickory to Elizabeth City, clos ] ing the loop with the Suffolk - | Winfall-Elizabeth City line (thereby -providing additional ca j pacity to meet the economic growth of the area and a high .er degree of reliability of ser -1 vice. This line has been includ |ed in our future plans for sev- I eral years. In fact, our studies (had indicated the need for the completion of this line during ! 1961, and, -therefore, provision ‘for the construction was includ ed in our 1959 budget and the project was authorized o-n March 31, 1959. We realized at the time of au , thorization that it would be ne necessary to start engineering promptly in order to have thi line in service in 1961. There fore, we proceeded immediate l * and, to date, have preliminary field studies, secur ed aerial photographs of the en tire route of the line, and drawn in the approximate location of the line on the aerial photo graphs. On July 7, 1959, engineers were instructed to begin the ac tual field survey of the line and preparation of property plats for right of way acquisition. Our plans call for construction to .follow promptly, with completion planned for as early in 1961 as practicable. Upon receiving your letter of July 14, we reviewed -our rec ord of service interruptions to -; Edenton from 1983 to the pres | ent time and find that, in this ! twenty-two-year period, then have been twelve interruptions of over one hour and ten inter ruptions ranging from five to fif ty minutes. These numbers do not include eight interruptions of over one hour and two of lesser time, which were arrang ed so-r to make changes and im provements to the circuit. We are aware fully of our ob ligation to render service with the -highest degree of reliability consistent with sound business principles. We agree readily that the load in this general area is increasing to the poin where steps should be taken to improve the capacity and relia, oility. A program to accofn pliaa this had already bead up-! utr dutch fee*vfe -ene recent muer rupuojuj, an suaed above, and We are- omtlideni toe resort wtU meet this goal. i Very truly yours, h. d, Goodman ..I Vice President ! cc: Governor Burner tt Hodges N.
