PAGE TWO k-llgftON OH* Federal Law Prohibits Work On Farm Under 16 During School - - W State Labor Commissioner Frank Crane today cautioned Tar Heel farmers against em ploying youngsters under 16 ,years of age in farm work dur ing local school hours. “Such employment is piohibit ,ed by the child labor provisions of the Federal Wage and Hour Law, except where the farmer’s, own children work on his own| farm,” Crane said. The law applies to all young-, stera under 16, regardless of, whether they are North Carolina ’ residents or migrants from an- ■ other State, he added. Crane said there is no age re-i quirements for employment ofj young people in agriculture be fore or after local school hours, on Saturdays and Sundays, or during regular school holidays and vacations. ‘,lf a farmer’s or producer’s products move, directly or indi-; rectly, out of the State where! they are grown, he is subject ( to this law,” Commissioner Crane! explained. “It is the farmer’s: responsibility to find out the correct age of each young work er he employs. "The farmer is protected j against unintentional violation of| the law if he requires, and keeps j on file, an official age certificate j (Form D.L. 7) showing the young, worker to be at least 16. These are issued by County Superin tendents of Public Welfare.” Requirements of the federal law parallel and reinforce the N. C. Compulsory School At tendance Law, which requires that children attend school un-. . til they are 16 years of age,! 1 Crane said. ; The Labor Commissioner urged farmers who are in doubt abodt the application of the law to in-j quire at the Wage and Hour Of-! f.'ce in the State Department of Labor at Raleigh.
