PAGE SIX ascTToif two AROUND THE FARMS (IN CHOWAN COUNTY By C. W. OVERMAN, Chowan County Agent m w L Peanut Picking Moved At A Good Pace last week until rain cdme on Friday nght and Sat ' today. Generally, yields are mu.h lower than lent year. The highest yield I have heard of this season was about 3,400 pounds per acre from a two- j acre field but I have forgotten who the grower was. I -• Joe Suggs of the N. C. Peanut ‘ Growers’ Association was by to /‘see me last week. He had trav eled over most cf the North Carolina peanut area. Joe says 1 it looks like that the crop is | twenty per cent short cf last! year. Sorre cf our Chowan ; County yields are about half what the yield was l_st ye_r cn those farms. - This may be a good t'me to' hold peanuts or put them in Government Loan. The present market is 2 cents per i undred; t pounds above the loan rate.! ‘ With a peanut crop that may! be 20 to 30 percert under that, of -last year, it is very poss ble the price may rise. The rise may come after the bulk of the packing is over. It is well worth I growers’ consideration. Comity Negro Home Economics Agent ' Thirty-four from Chowan County attended the fiftaenth annual meeting cf the Northeast ern Distriit Federation cf Home Demonstration Clubs held at South Ayden High School, Ayd en, North Carolina last Thurs day. In the morning session, Dr. W. N. Ridley, president of the Elizabeth City Teachers’ College, gave the address. Taking the theme: “Today’s Home Bui ds Tomorrow’s World,” Dr. Ridley spoke on “Leadership in Respect to the Home.” He left the >e thoughts with us. Every wo man is a leader in her home. Readers- have transformed the home in the past few years and now rural homes have the same conveniences as city homes. The theme applies to every organi sation where young people go to learn. Not necessarily just the home but sc.hoo’s, church schools, 4-H, NFA, NHA C übs, recreational clubs to name a few. Leaders everywhere have a grave responsibility. A real leader must want to sacrif ce, lead and help. He must not be ashamed of his duty, he must b ■ tolerant, smart and sti-k to principles, make up his mind to do what is right of what others say. The greatest theme of this decade will be ex cellence that is doing those things that are good in the best Way we can. Try to do ex cellently well those things th"t you do. Every one was chal lenged to do his share to make the world better in the future than it is now—as it is better now. than in the past. Welcome remarks were g : ven by J. W. Ormond, prh-cip~l o' the school. Greetings by R. L-. Martin, Chairman of the Pitt Qounty Board of Commissioners. He pointed out three things we must do to create better hemes, which will make better rom tnunitie.; and better citizens.
