SgllN CHOWAN COUNTY
By MELBA DuBOIS. Extension Secretary
Since Mr. Overman and the
other Chowan County Extension
workers have been in Raleigh
since Sunday afternoon working
on a State Fair booth, I shall try
to write Mr. Overfan’s column
for him this week.
Each year a certain number of
counties in the state are askad
to prepare an exhibit for the
State Fair. This year was Cho
watl County’s turn and the sub
ject selected for the booth was
“4-H Members—A Part of Com
munity Development.” At this
writing, I do not know how the
judges voted on the booth, but
I chn say that many hours of
work and thought have gone in
to it and many people in Eden
ton and out in the county have
contributed a lot toward making
it an outstanding one, whether
the judges think so or not.
Imagine trying to fill a room
sized space, 12 feet by 15 feet,
to be exact, with a coordinated
exhibit which will portray an
educational message to the
thousands of people who pass
by! Last year a tabulation was
made of the number of people
who stopped at 12 booths de
veloped by county extension
units. The average number of
people stopping to look at the
booths during the five-minute
test periods ranged from an av
erage of 2.8 for one booth to 25.5
for another booth. Let’s hope
Chowan County’s booth is an
“attention-getter.”
Vegetables: (Taken from a re
lease from our Extension vege
table specialist, Albert Bana
dyga). October is “storage
Month” and Jack Frost is just
around the corner getting ready
to nip our vegetable crops. Let’s
beat him to the punch this year
by watching the weather report
and harvest tomatoes, egg
plants, peppers, snap beans, lima
beans, peas and other such vege
tables just before the frost and
store them out of his reach.
Often a several weeks supply of
these highly perishable vege
tables may be successfully saved.
Some folks save these tender
crops from the first frost by
covering the plants in the gar
den with burlap bags, tobacco
cloth, feed bags, plastic and
even large paper bags.
Onion rot in storage is usual
ly due to improperly cured
necks. Make sure the necks are
thoroughly dried. Onions with
large necks should be eaten
first since they will not store
very long. Vegetables for stor
age can be classed in two gen
eral groups: (1) Those that re
quire cold and moist conditions
like beets, turnips, carrots, ruta
bagas, cabbage, Chinese cabbage,
celery, parsnips, salsify, radish
and Irish potatoes which keep
best at temperatures of 35 to 40
degrees F. with an abundance
of moisture in the air and (2)
those that require cool tempera
tures (45 to 60 degrees F.) and
air that is moderately moist are
garlic, onions, pumpkins and
squash. An easy way to store
hoot crops like beets, carrots,
turnips, rutabagas, parsnips and
the like is to leave them right
in the row and cover them with
a few inches of soil. This pre
vents rapid freezing and thaw
ing and preserves much of their
quality.
Plan now to sow a winter
cover crop of crimson clover, rye
or rye grass in your garden to
prevent “winter washing” and to
add oganic matter to the soil.

Plant it now in between the rows
you are still harvesting. You
might add a few radish seeds
and thus have radisn in aoout
30 days.
